The Downups
The Downup family have a pleas¬
ant residence and are wont to have
a gathering there of their neigh¬
bors pretty regularly once a month.
No eating is expected, and thus
people are more free to attend on
these occasions.
But lately, it seems, the family
concluded to have a special supper
for themselves, and by a singular
freak put it just at the hour of one
of these monthly gatherings. It
turned out to be rather an unseem¬
ly affair. Suddenly before the
company dispersed the business of
eating was evidently at hand, and
this whilst the family, quite nu¬
merous, were scattered one here,
another there, undistinguished by
any badge in the assembly. The
plan was for the waiters to take
the supplies of the table to the
scattered family, finding them as
could.
It was curious to see them ferret
ihg out the members. It was real
ly a brave task, too, to give to one
and pass by half dozen others ;even
not if they help shut catchin their eyes the they flavor could of' j
bo
such “elements. -
Didn’t they want some, too?
But there it was, giving to one
alone, whilst a half dozen o'thers
or more are left with nothing to doj
but sit by and see him eat hig sup- [
per.
Now it is perfectly right for the
Downup family to have their own
supper and they alone eat it. But
why they should think it beautiful
to put the tim« for a supper they
alone are to eat at an hour when
they knew there was to be a neigh
borly gathering at their house is
difficult to understand without im
puting to them an egregious lack
of civility. As those neighbors ex
pec ted to come and go without eat
ing, it would have been much more
becoming (at least to many of at
think) to have allowed them to do
so rather than to have purposely
detained them to see others eat.
We here call to mind bow a hint
was made to tbe effect that the sup
per was to “show forth”, a great
event in tbe history of divine grace,
But what event could it possibly
be? We can think of nothing in
tbe religious world that the supper,
a* conduc te d by tbe Downups,
could show forth unless it i* that
sod of election whereby it is fake
ly pretended that a few partake of
Minium i«^«* thev were H rcte d
BROKEN!
were not elected. What else than
this did the supper as conducted by
the Downups “show forth?”
The affair becomes more singu¬
lar still when it is known that the
supper was intended to show the
union of the family in perpetuating
the memory of their distinguished
benefactor. But ' the occasion
showed that there was no family
union about it. The members
could not so much as come togeth
or in any way show who they
were. They preferred to be apart
from one another, even whilsfthe^
ate. Certainly there was no chance
for it to be said “Behold, how
these brothers dnd sisters love one
another.” Nor could it be claimed
that it showed their love to others.
It was eating neither with one an¬
other nor with others. It was eat¬
ing their distinctively family sup¬
per in a crowd.
We believe the tendency of the
Downups is to judge of themselves
entirely by their sur roundings.
They don > t Kem to know that they
can bave any re ligion or even eat
satisfactorily except when they are
in a crowd. Whack.
