Official Paper of the Ci£> of Toccoa ami Coun¬
ty of Habersham.
The two new battleships of
which plans are now being drawn*
are not to cost over $4,000,00°
each, says the New York World.
Turning labor into time at $1 a day,
the census average, this would
make the maximum cdst of each the
work of 4.000 men for 1,000' days,
or about three years. This would
include, of course, all the time
spent in preparing all the materials
of all kinds—as in digging the coal
to heat the furnace to make iron
and steel for nails and armor and
guns, felling the trees to make ihe
lumber, digging the mineral for
the paint, planting and cultivating
the beans for making the oil, and
So ou. So that probably the esti
mate above is well within the actual
cost of iabor-jime required.
The Macon Telegraph pretended
this week to poll the country pa
pers on the free silver question and
according to their way of polling
the gold standard papers are in the
majority If the Telegraph had
polled all the papers in the different
counties, the difference for a
double standard would have been
greatly id* the majority, In the
ninth district, The Telegraph has
not more than half the names of the
county papers on its list. Of the
four paperg of Habersham county it
Denies only one—whereas all lour
should have been put in the double
standard column, Try it over

The practical joker is still abroad
in the land and doing deadly work.
Last week’s blue ribbon practical
joker killed a young woman by
jerking a chair away as she w;i6
alieut to sit on it, causing her to
fall heavily on the floor, The
week 1*ffore a young woman caused
the death of a preacher by playful¬
ly prodding him in the leg with a
brass belt pin. The . probabilities
are that the practical jokers will
this week be just as active and fun
ny as ever.

Personal Paragraphs About People You Know
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schaffer’s
At Home in honor of their daughter
M. E. and May Simpson, yesterday
afternoon from 5 til! S o’clock was
in every respect characteristic of
these delightful entertainers.
The little girls to whom the
party was given, have not only
looked forward to it, but worked
for this vacation pleasure of having
their little’friends with them, for
when the school term began, Mrs.
Schaffer promised a party to her
little daughter and her friend pro¬
vided both got upon the roll of
honor every month. They worked
conscienciously, received thc
honors, and enjoyed their party
yesterday, a hundred fold more be¬
cause it was in the nature of a re¬
ward. The large number of little
folk present were happy as only
little children can be for three
hours—nothing being spared on the
part of the lath girls and their
mother to give every one the great
est pleasure.
Mr. Sch.Eicr's beautiful home
with its large lawn, llowers. rustic
seats, tennis court, and thirty or
more little children flitting about
like so many little free birds, was
a charming scene which one who
saw it can not soon forget.
Delicious ices, cakes and
were served to tiro little ones dur
ing the afternoon, and when
child started for home it was with
many sincere wishes for the bright
little honor girls.

accomplishments is added a most
beautiful voice for singing
