I We Change Name but Not Prin¬
ciple.
I Usually newspaper men have a
great antipathy to a change of the
name of their paper for various rea¬
sons : Among them, the older a pa¬
per may be the better known it is
and in many instances it has been
a welcome visitor to households
from childhood to old age,and from
generation to generation.
Such is the case with The Toc-
coa Times and The News, especi¬
ally. The News has been publish¬
ed here for tw T enty years and its
weekly visits have been eagerly
looked for by some of its friends
and subscribers ever since the first
issue in 1872, but today we send in
its stead the young giant, The
Southern Record.
The name is changed but the
principle upon w T hich the News
was reared still remains and the
new paper takes up guard duty for
Toccoa where the Times-News left
off.
The name is changed be use we
hope, henceforth, not only o fully
cover the local field, but tc tell of
the glories of this beautiful South¬
land of ours, and particularly of
this God-favored section to our less
fortunate brothers in the cold and
frigid north and the wind-swept
prairies of the west, and ask them
to cast their lot in the land of pe¬
rennial spring and pleasant sunshine
and help develop that which a mu¬
nificent God lias given us—the best
country on earth.
Genial George Erwin and Col.
J. C. Edwards, of Clarkesville,
were visitors to Toccoa, “the Beau-
tiful,” Wednesday. We are always
j glad to see these “boys” in Toccoa.
They are good fellows and good
lawyers too.
Clark and Bailey guarantee every
animal they sell.
GX.Matteson, the photographer,
made a business trip to

! has a good eye for beauty and wants
to add the beaming smiles of the
mountain lass to his collection of
photographs.
Toccoa continues to grow. New
houses are going up everyday. If
one takes a walk over our little city
once a week, each walk will show
some new enterprise or residence
going up. We expect to have 5000
people resident in Toccoa by the
spring of ’98.
| The Record expects to be a
potent factor in the upbuilding of
j Toccoa in the future, and we believe
our efforts will prove of more avail
than in the past, though no one
agency has done more for Toccoa
than did the Times during its exis-

The Wheels to Hove.
The local land company only lack
a few hundred acres of land to or¬
ganize and go actively to work in
developing this section. Toccoa
is vastly interested in the outcome
of this enterprise. It is my firm
belief that Toccoa is calmly sleep¬
ing over great possibilities; that
this one enterprise is capable of do¬
ing more to attract people to this
section of Georgia than anything
that heretofore has been started
in the Piedmont region. Another
thing, the gentlemen backing the
enterprise are men of ample means
and widely known in business cir¬
cles, who never let any enterprise
in which they are interested lan¬
guish when once they take hold.
Now what the citizens of Toccoa
need do is to talk the enterprise up
to home people and get them in¬
terested enough to list their lands
with the society.
There are too many land poor
people in this section for the coun¬
try to ever become prosperous as
long as this condition of things lasts.
They need more money and less
land. The more neighbors they
have the more valuable will be¬
come their property.
There was never a fairer propo¬
sition offered than that offered by
the company here. Those who put
their lands in the hands of the de¬
velopment company for sale abso¬
lutely run no risk as they are paid
cash before a deed is asked for,and
the}' are not asked to contribute one
cent toward the development and
sale of said property.
Beside ail this, those who list
p r0 p er {-y are given 20 per cent of

prise is a success. If it should be
a failure you lose nothing but stock
which was given you free, and the
company lose both money and stock
—their only chance to make money
is in making the other So per cent
of stock valuable.
Could anything be fairer?
Dr. Jeff Davis is the trustee and
Mayor Owen is the attorney, they
could not, nor would I recommend
anything that was not eminently
fair.
[Since the above was written the
company has secured the necessary
5000 acres of land and will now en¬
ter actively at work in platting,
surveying and otherwise preparing
to develop and colonize their lands.
They want 20,000 acres more.]
