Clarance Davis has been trans¬ ferred by the Southern Express Co., from his run between Elber- and Toccoa, to a run. between Asheville, N. C., and Ducktown, Tenn. Ed Ramsay has taken the run on the Elberton Air Line. Several small Sunday burglaries are reported from the suburbs. The houses of M. B. Collier and Thomas Collins, -were entered by the thieves, from which food was taken, and the house of Mr. Davis was also entered, from which a gun was stolen. The young people had the last of a series of sociables they have been bolding this summer, at the resi¬ dence ot Air. Walker Gilmer, Alon- day night. Quite a crowd was present, and the music on mandolin and guitar by Alessrs. Paul Mathe- son and Joe Jones was greatly en¬ joyed. The social entertainment given by Airs. C. C. Walker, in honor of her niece, Aliss Annie AIcDaniel, was highly enjoyed by all. Among the participants were Misses Jones, AIcAvoy, Payne, Conley, Murphy and Gilmer; Alessrs. Alosely, Alar- tir L Brown, Bryant, AIcAvoy and Burgess. Among the guests invited to meet Aliss Emily Divver, from Anderson, at Airs. E. P. Simpson’s on Satui*- dav night, were Alisses AIcAllister and Stevens, and Alessrs. Alathe- son, Harry and Karl Burgess and Dr. Cook, of Elberton. An invi¬ tation to that hospitable home is a guaranty of a pleasant time. The Falls seems a popular place for picnicUers r this summer . A l- niost ever T da y some of our y oun S people go there. Aliss Alarie Bruce entertained a small party of friends there on Monday last, and on Tues- da y ^ rs> Craig and family, accom- P an i e d fy Alisses Netherland, Gil¬ mer and Air. Glenn Davis, enjoyed a most charming day out there. Air. Freeman Westmoreland, who lives at Tugalo station, brought to town a one-horse load of watermel¬ ons Wednesday that was probably the heaviest, for the number of melons, ever brought to a North Georgia town, and will, probably, compare with any load of like num¬ ber anywhere. The load consisted of 17 melons, the aggregate weight of which was 728 pounds. Prof. Barrett, who assumes the position of superintendent of Toc¬ coa high school made vacant by the departure of Prof. Fessenden, has arrived and will be ready to begin work next week. He comes to us well recommended, having been assistant State School Commission er and a wide experience in teach- ing. His wife is a most charming woman, highly cultured. They will prove quite an acquisition to Toccoa society. t We g.ve . Professor and Airs. Barrett a hearty welcome. Rev. C. R. He is filled with zeal and love for his work, and the Presby- terians cannot do better than give j him a call, to take effect two years from now. Sunday morning about 6 o'clock an alarm of fire was given, and soon a crowd gathered at the Baptist parsonage, where a small fire was burni 0 which was soon put out. Some gentleman discovered smoke and flame coming out of the roof of the kitchen of the parsonage and hurriedly aroused Airs. Hiott (who was about ready to go to the kit- c hen,) and together they ran into t j ie burning room and threw a few buckets of water on the flame and extinguished it. A few shingles were torn from the roof and the floor and walls were burned quite badly. It is probable that if the fi re had not been discovered when it was, in a few minutes more the whole house would have been de- stroyed. The fire caught &om a box of ashes that were taken up the day before. It is said that ex-Chief Justice Bleckley informed the county com¬ missioners last week at Clarkesville that they could not build a court house this year, as they must have the money on hand before they can let the contract. It is also under¬ stood that the commissioners will not build a new court house till next spring, as it will be next February before all the taxes for this year are collected, and court house taxes will be collected at the next tax gathering time. The many friends of the late Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Smith were glad to welcome their daughter, Sadie, who has been on a visit to Mrs. E. Schaefer. After an absence of four years we find her grown into a most charming young lady. She lives with her uncle, Rev. H. F. Quil- lian, now stationed at West Point. Miss Sadie is quite literary in her tastes, having already -written sev¬ eral poems showing decided talent, and receiving a gold medal for the best short story, in a contest with quite a number of contestants. We regret to announce the de¬ parture of Prof. N. A. Fessenden and family the early part of next week. He has been appointed su- perintendent of the Carnesville high school. They will be missed, es¬ pecially the professor, who has al¬ ways taken such an active part in all church and educational affairs, being superintendent of the Meth¬ odist Sunday school, president of the Epworth league and a valued member of the choir. He is a man of high culture and a thoroughly good teacher. Alay the greatest success attend him. Aliss Ola Jones leaves on Friday, Aug. 27d, for her new home. Aliss Jones will be greatly missed. Fore¬ most in all church and social life, earnest and brilliant—giving plea¬ sure to all by her many accomplish¬ ments. She was president of the literary department of the Epworth League, a prominent member of the Womans’ Literary Club, having served two terms as president of that body; a most successful teach¬ er—one of the best we have ever had. Eatonton is to be congratu¬ lated upon gaining her, and the best wishes of a host of friends attend her. A fine “little stranger” came to the home of one of our most popu¬ lar young couples, for a visit of in¬ definite length. Alany friends, ac¬ tuated by the best of motives and a desire to show their interest, have selected a name for the young man. Here is a partial list of them : Vic- tor,David,Charles Dickens, Charles Rt and William. Now, if he were a royal baby all these names might be his, but as he claims to be only a wee American citizen, his parents hate to choose him a good old ^ name, J worthy ' so pre- a bit of hun anity .
