“Good Will to All Men.’
OUR RELIGIOUS COLUMN.
Sparks.
Fashion flashes. Piety shines.
Character will never bring you
to Christ. Christ will bring you
to character.
The words of the gospel are
health words. Paul calls them
“hygiene words.”
When a man is born again, he
is not born a man, but a babe in
Christ, and you cannot expect
much from a babe.
How different good men are.
Some will not go to prayer meet¬
ing if they are to speak ; others if
thev are not to speak.
The best theory of the nature
and extent of the atonement is
Paul’s, in Gal. 2 120 : “The son of
God loved me and gave himself for
me. ”
“You cannot serve God and
mammon, but if you serve God
you may have all the mammon you
work for; for then you will make
your mammon do as you do—serve
God.
You do not believe a man be-
cause of his oath, but his oath be¬
cause of the man. Therefore, the
oath is superfluous; therefore, it
is wicked; theretore, swear not at
all.” Cut Gems.
The Prayer of the Nation.
Bv J.G. Holland.
God give men! A time like
this demands
Strong minds, great hearts, true
faith and ready hands.
Men whom the lust for offic
does not kill;
Men whom the spoils of office
cannot buy ;
Men who pos c ess opinions and a
will :
Men who have honor, and who
will not ID;
Men who can stand before a
demagogue
And scorn his treacherous flat-
teries without winking.
Tall men, sun crowned, who live
above the fog
In public duty and in private
thinking.”
Christian Observer.
Purity, peace, prosperity. What
a trinity of gifts! Their price is
above rubies. Thrice happy the
church wherein these three abound.
God hatli joined them together;
and, as gracious gifts they come
and go together; together they
abide. One is never to be found
without the others even in the in¬
dividual soul, much less in the
community of souls which we call
the church. There may be peace,
and there may be prosperity with-
ou t purity; but it is a carnal peace
and a mere worldly prosperity, in-
