* Temptation.
For God cannot be tempted with evil’
neither tempteth he any naan —St. James,
h, 1».
TherlT^ e very few people who
l ave not been sore tempted to do
w hat neither reason nor conscience
would approve. To resist is to add
fiber to your character and tojyield
is to lose what it is very difficult to
regain—your self-respect.
Temptation never comes out in¬
ti* the open and never argues fairly.
It iloes not dare to tell the whole
truth, but presents a subject in the
light of false logic, gilds u bad ar¬
gument until it looks like gold and
always leaves its victim to im¬
measurable regret.
A despotic conscience which
tines not know how to surrender is
the safest guide we can have, for
then one can look^heaven and earth
in tlie face ;but if for some promised
good or pleasure we bid our con-
science vacate its throne, happiness
and peace of mind take their de-
part ui e. There is. therefore, noth-
ing on the planet of so much worth
as a clean conscience. If you have
it for a bedfellow your sleep will
not be disturbed.
I have watch the subtle processes
of temptation iti myself and other*.
It comes in the guise of good ad¬
vice m order the more easily to ac
complish your ruin, It sneers at
your moral sense, assures you that
we are here to enjoy ourselves in
whatever way opportunity may of¬
fer and declures .that your scruples
have no solid foundation. If you
do not grasp the offered advantage
some one else will, therefore do not
hesitate. You are only too willing
to listen, and while you do so your
inorai sense is being dulled. Reiter-
ation of this false reasoning still
further undermines your rectitude,
and after a while you pretend to
be convinced, but it is only a pre¬
tence. The deed is done and then
you wake up to find that while you
have gained someth ng you have
lost still more. You have gained a
well-filled purse or you have in¬
dulged in some demoralizing
pleasure, but you have lost a well
tilled heart and learned wh*t it is
to hate yourself.
It is somewhat curel world, be¬
cause fulse estimates of what con¬
stitutes happiness have thrown so
many temptations m our way.
There is an overvaluation of money
and an undervaluation of moral
principle. The race is so eager, so
wild, so intoxicating that we lor-
get everything except to get ahead
of our competitors, and the means
take , ' ... . .
we to accomplish this are ju*t-
itied, we think, by the fact of win-
mug. As a ’consequence ihe tone
of life is lowered and we measure
a man by what he , h«*. , t.o. by , what ,
lie is. The bank account rather
than the character excites our envy
P ; , es and the pursuit of riches
are the ba>es ol orderly society, pro¬
vided riches- and rectitude are inter-
wo veil ; but riche* without the recti*
tude are of no benefit io unv one.
Men and women are too ready to
pay a thoghtiess, a reckless price
to, the Moods they CO,, vet fame
is worth something, and so is
putation, if it is honestly
but if you compromise vour honor
you are practically n selling .... your
soul.
What we need in this generation
is h heroic dose ot that old fashion¬
ed collective—moral principle.
'1 he only real man, the on.y man
who is recognized in heaven, is the
upright and downright man. It
may be hard to per**iude the public
The Toccoa Record

of thin, truth, but it is the truth
nevertheless, or cannot be evaded
or ignored, If a nation oj an indi-
viduai is to live comfortable it must
live virtuously. Fals standards
mean false and wretcned lives, and
the logic of events will make that
fact known with terrific emphasis.
Honesty comes first and after
that anything you can get. When
you give up the honesty, the purity
of heart, in exchange for anything
else you suddenly find that you
have been cheated out of your be6t
self The object of life is not to
acpuire, noi that solely, unless it
be to acquire character. Your
temptation to gash your conscience
is based on a promise which will
never be kept, or if the worldly
goods are delivered you will be
robbed of something worth a great
deal more. Stiffen your conscience
until it will not feel the force of
temptation, and then you will be
ready for life, for death and for any
other world to which you may go
when your term on earth expires.
The only thing to set men right
and keep them right is the Sermon
on the Mount. It is the thought
of others which consecrates the
thought of self. A staff and scrip
with a clean heart will do more for
human happiness than whatever
else you may desire, and until we
get back to that fact and to a full
appreciation of it we shall tail in
the great essentials.

The Egg Famine.
Hat a hen any human intelligence
is what we should like to find out.
Pinto, or some other old party,
dfiened man to be “ a two legged
animal without feathers,” and
why may not a hen be a human
with feathers? She certainly
acts like it in the matter of eggs,
Under our beautiful tariff there
is a duty of five cents per dozen
on eggs imported into this couu-
try. Just how the tariff maker*
made out that the business of «gg
laying is an “infant industry”
which ahould be protected we are
are not able to say. When
Pilgrims landed at Plymouth we’ve
no doubt they brought hens with
them, and their decendunts have
been engaged in the business ot
every since so that there seems
no good ground for considering
thu among infants which needs
protection, The ostensible objects
of the tariff was to prevent our
own hens being driven out of
business by the downtrodden fowls
of Canada. It was represented
that Canadian hens could nianu-
facture eggs much cheaper than
our stock could do, and that
less the latter were protected the
country would be flooded and
deludged with the result of cheap
foreign labor in the shape of free
trade egg*. The duty was put on.
and now we see the inevitable
result. The confounded hens have
formed a trust and put the price
up beyond the reach of any body
but millionaires and, to make the
matter worse, they have evidently
gore on a general strike and de¬
termined to lay only when they
please. That is the human in the
hens. They are following in the
lead of the two legged animals
without feathers, and we dont
like it a little bit.
What do we care if Canada can
lay over us in the matter of egg
of egg production ? What is it
to us whether their liens are free
bom or are subjects of a monarchy ?
We want eggs and want them bad
and we don't care whether they
are made in Canada or Kalamazoo
There is neither sense nor reason
in the way the hens are acting,
and we believe they know it.
Right at this time there is an un¬
usual demand for that kind of
food. Thousands of good people
refrain from eating meat during
Lent and eggs form a good sub¬
stitute but what do the hens care
They know that this is the season j
when they ought to be on double
duly to f supply the demand, l*u.
