The^Depot Needs Water.
Now that the Southern Railway
has added so much to the its em¬
ployees in the depot, by enlarging
the room there, it would be a valu¬
able addition to the pleasure of the
traveling public who have to lay
over here so often, if the railroad
would put in a sewerage pipe,
have water, ladies retiring room,
etc. This the company has want¬
ed to do, and would do, but the
town council heretofore has not
given permission for running the
necessary drainage pipe, We do
not believe the present council
would object to the railroad com¬
pany doing this. The Southern
Railroad is taking the lead all over
the country in accommodating its
patrons, and it is a great pity the
town of Toccoa will not let the
water system go in there.
The Quarantine Law.
We have no protest specially to
file against the city council, and its
quarantine regulations, further
than to say that such an ordinance
ought to be made equally as ap¬
plicable to drummers as to any
body else. We are not prepared
to go on the witness stand and
swear that drummers come and go
between Cornelia and Toccoa at
will, but we have every reason to
believe they are doing it. This is
not right. If the council is in
earnest about this quarantine,
which is all a useless thing anyway,
lor they have scarcely any of the
socalled small pox at Cornelia, and
none at Mt Airy, let them enforce
it. Otherwise the
We happen to know as a matter
of actual fact that in Buforc , Ga.,
where tliey had several hundred
rases this spring of this mongrel
*o called small pox, there was not
a single death. The leading phy¬
sician there, insisted from start to
finish that it was not small pox,
and people who had it went right
along working as if they had mere¬
ly a tooth ache or a briar in their
foot. What’s the use of quar¬
antining against such a fever? No¬
body at Cornelia has had it. There
is no danger.
About Private Schools.
We have it by grape vine mes¬
sage, which of course is not entire¬
ly reliable, that there is a plan on
foot for starting a private school
here. We rise to remark that such
a plan is ruinous to the best inter¬
est of Toccoa, should it be carried
out.
A pretty proposition would Toc-
coa’s boasted public school system,
than which there is not a more
efficient in the whole of North
Georgia, with little halt brained,
upstart, foolish private schools
springing up here and there. If
this is going to be done, just rent
out the $10,00, public school
building for a cotton warehouse,
repudiate the bonded indebtedness,
and let the people of Toccoa send
their children to Martin or Ayers-
ville, or some school that is blessed
with harmony and common sense.
We do not desire to be rude
about this school question ; but w 7 e
know how much it has to do with
future development of Toccoa.
There is nothing here, cotton
tactories or any thing else that w ill
do the town one half the good bf a
good school and when patrons, m-
spired by personal attachment for
this teacher or that take up the idea
of private schools, it makes us feel
bad. If there are teachers who as-
pire to operate a private school,
let them go off somewhere in the
woods, where they may be private
and run one. No private schools
should bob up their fiat heads in
Toccoa.
Gilmer—Walker.
Once more have the wedding
bells rung out their joyful sounds
in Toccoa, announcing the fact
that another man maiden fair have
plighted their troth to love, honor
and obey each other till death shall
part them. The contracting parties
were Miss Birdie Rose Giliner of
Ft. Madison,S. C*.and Mr Olivsr
R. Walker of Easley, S. C., both
of whom are well known and
loved in Toccoa. The ceremony
took place in the parlor at the
Swift house Sunday afternoon at
3:30 o’clock, Dr. Riley of Gaines¬
ville officiating. The marriage
was a very qniet one*, only a few
intimate friends of the young
couple being invited, The bride,
as Miss Birdie Gilmer, was one of
the most popular young ladies in
this section and was a frequent
visitor to Toccoa,where her friends
were counted by the score, The
polar at the hotel was beautifully
draped for the occasion, and the
bride-to-be accompanied by her
maids of honor. Misses Buna and
Maude Swift,made a pretty picture
when they came in and took their
places. The groom was accom¬
panied by his brother, Mr. Roy
Walker, as best man. After the
ceremony, an elaborate dinner was
served bv Mrs. Swift, after which
the happy couple left on No. 40
for Easley, where they will reside
in the future, Mr. Walker, the
luckey groom, being stationed at
place as operator for the Southern
Railroad. The Record joins in
congratulations and good wishes,
for a long and prosperous life.

The keeper of the senate and
House restaurant in the Capitol in
Washington has just been fined
$300 each for selling liquor to their
patrons. There is a licens system in
Washington, but the district com¬
missioners do not have power to
grant a license to occupants of any
public building. Senators and Mem¬
bers of Congress insist on having
alcoholic drinks served to them in
the Capitol restaurants, but when¬
ever the question of legalizing the
sale there comes up, there is always
a majority to vote against it. The
restaurant keepers have appealed,
and it is by no means certain that
they will ever have to pay their
fines.

Alfred Austin is the only writer
* n England who is considered cer-
tain to get a handle to his name at
the coronation. Of course it is be-
cause he is poet laureate, but why
is he poet laureate? And how will
readers who do not belong to the
royal family feel if Mr. Austin is
honored and all tue bigger men left
outside? The only thing to be said
is that lauiesteships and their at¬
tendant benefits are like kissing;
they go by favor.

Better Than Pills.
The question has been asked,
as In what way are Chamberlain’s
Stomach & Liver Tablets superior
to pills?” Our answer is: They
are easier and pleasant to take,
more mild and gentle in effect and
more reliable as they can always be
depended upon. Then they cleanse
and invigorate the stomach and
leave the bowels in a natural con-
dition, while pills are more harsh
in effect and their use is often fol¬
lowed by constipation, For sale
