Heavy on ye Dancers. —The Argus of
a 'very severe article
upon ‘hose of ortr citizens, and those visit
ing ns. wfto repaired to the City Hall after
the Sunday School celebration was over with
on the 7th inst., and amused themselves for
a short while “tripping the light fantastic
toe.”
In alluding to the dance it says t
Disreputable,— We learn that during the
Sunday School celebration, in this city on
the 7th inst.. a company of men and women
got up a dance in the City Hall, thus bur
lesquing the sacred ness of the occasion,
and demonstrating the demoraliswtipn of
the times. We regret thajtßainhridge should
be thus trifled with and ner repufatton tar
nished by a few wicked people, at a time
when she had so much at stake. Wje can
assure the various Churches, whose Sunday
School children Were entrusted to the safe
keeping of our citizens, that the conduct
of these revellers met with ho countenance
from the good people of this place. **o km
pora ! O marts !"
Now we our
would knowingly misrepresent auything, in.
this case he was wrongly informed, as we
do not believe that he knew or heatd any
thing about a dance, uutil probably a day
or two afterwards
We must bring our worthy cotemporary
to task, on one or two points, or those who
happen to read his article at a distance
will thiuk we have a set of hyenas in our
midst.
ffhe idea the article from the Argus,
would at once convey, to any casual reader
is; that while Col. Fleming in behalf of the
Bainbridge Sunday School was welcoming
the visiting schools, the children singing,
&c., that a parcel of “men and women* in
tent upon making a burlesque of the whole
affair, marched to the City Hall, aud got
np a dance.
, “We can assure the various churches,
whose Sunday-School children were on*
trusted to keeping of our citizens,*’
that such was hot the case.
After the celebration was over with, and
the crowd scattering in every direction, a
party of ladies and gentlemen from Thomas
ville and elsewhere along the road, as well
as from Bainbridge, who were in nowise
connected with the Sunday-School, but
merely visitors, proposed to visit the City
Hall, and if any music, could be procured
to have a dance; after considerable delay
music was obtained, and a party ffadjlrsf
got on the floor and commenced dancing
when the engine blew, and away they all
went for the depot.
This is the extent to which, the “reputa
tion of Bainbridge was tarnished by a few
wicked people.”
We know something about the affair for
we was Ihnr. Our brother Russell, having
no foot for dancing wasn’t-.
Since the above was in type we have re
cieved a communication on the subject,
The City Council has subscribed fifty
thousand dollars in city bonds, bearing 7.
percent, interest and payable in twenty
years, to the Bainbridge, CutJibert and
Columbus Railroad. Provided the votefe of
the city shall ratify the same at an election
to be held on the 26th instant.

Messrs. Editors: —I visited your beautiful
little city a few days ago, for the purpose of
purchasing my m-cejssary supplies for the
year. I must say that I found goods of
every description remarkably low. Among
other things I had to purchase a lot of
medicines—after enquiring at all of the
dry goods stores, that kept such articles,
and the different drug establishments, I
came to*the conclusion that I would make
my purchases of Messrs. J. A Butts & Cos.,
fbnnd these gentlemen very polite and ac*
coinrnodsting, and with a much larger
stock than auj' other house, “and last
though not least’' 1 f considered that they
offered much better bargains. I have re
commended them to all of my friends, and
think in the future their business through
our section will increase largely.
Crops are looking tolerably well, consid
ering the very unpropitious seasons we
have had.

New York, May 17.—There is much ex
citement in Wall stieet in consequence of
the failure of the banking firm of Schepeler
& Cos. They were largely short of gold. The
general estimate of their short contracts on
gold is $8,000,000. It is understood also
that they were short of Government bonds,
and had a considerable amount of bills of
exchange. The greatest excitement and
confusion prevails'aad the failure has caus*
ed an unsettled feeling in all departments.
The gold was first to feel tl»e effects of the
failure, and at the opening there was a-per**
