another negro, charged with burglary, from
the house, and horse stealing, attempted to
break jail.
These two negroes were . confuted,*tji

means or other, they managed to break
their chains several days previous to the
attemped escape. In order that the jailor
might not the chains being'W,
they had tied the tyo ends together with a
string, and were waiting for a good oppor

jailor would be adsent for while on Monday
morning they went to work and had succeed

when the jailor, fortunately, returned, and
hearing the noise, went up apd found them
trying to force the outer door; be immedi

floor.
Thu rmgroes say that a whilo man by the
name of trill, who wis confined in an ad.«

breaking their door, limy were to release
him. They also state, that Gill told them
if they did not succeed in forcing tlm outer
door, to remain cpiiet until the jailor came
to bed them, then jerk him into the cell
and murder him.
Gill denies all of these statements, and
says he knew nothing about the matter
until he saw them breaking the locks.

Pic Nic of the (Colored) Sunday School Children.
On Saturday last we were present at a
pic-nic given by the (colored) Sunday
them." The most perfect order was pres
served throughout the day, and the best of
feeling existed between the white persous
present (aud there was a good many) and
the colored people.
Several speeches were made by Solti
whi e and colored men. The colored people
are ?ery anxious to establish a Savings
Bank and Land Association, and we would
like to see our people, land them a helping
haii(|. Tbt* tits,
and it is our duty, to try and improve their
condition and make good citizens out of
them.
After the speaking concluded, dinner was
anounced, and all soon gathvViid arourid
the table and partook of the bountiful
supply spread before them. About the
time dinner was over, a heavy shower came
up, winch caused a regular stajnpped for
the nearest houses.
