The P*#r Boitoe Par®.
On Friday last, in company with Mr. W.
w. Harrell ar.d Judge Joirnsou, our Ordi
nary, we paid a visit to the Pyor House
faint, situated about a mile and a half from
our city*. This farm was purchased last
fall by the Ofdirary, under the recent act
establishing Poor Houses in each county;
at the time of the purchase, it was in rath
er a dilapidated condition—but U presents
quite a different appearance ijftw-the
house lias been repaired, two or three very
comfortable little cottages have been erect
ed, and the fences undergone thorough re
pairs.
Mr. Harrell, the manager-of the place,
told us he had eighteen or twenty acres in
cotton and about twenty-6even in corn.
VVe walked over the crops and were sur
prised to see such corn and cotton growing
on a place that had always, been represen
ted to us, as being poor; btit’it only shows
what proper culture and a little guaub will
do. y
Mr. Harrell informed us that he had used
t wo kinds of fertilisin'*, Rhodes Superphos
phate and Wilcox, Gibbs & Go’s Muuipila
ted, and says: that Rhodes has proved to
be the best of the two, at least in this ease.
We were shown cotton waist high with
plenty of grown bolls on it—the corn
was as good as any we have seen in the
county —at a low calculation, wp think off
of the eighteen acres, ten bales of cotton
will be gathered The lauds have been .
worked mostly by chain gang birds, these
as well as the paupers of the county have
to be fed and clothed, therefore we Are of
the opinion that the Poor House farm in
stead of being an expense to the county
(as some have supposed) will bring in a
revenue.
After leaving the Poor House we drove
by Judge Johnson’s place— he too has a
good crop. ( *
We will add that we found pau
pers at the Poor House.
Wanted a Battoa. <
Yesterday we • noticed a *mati, about
twenty-two of three years of age, asking

He whs a stranger to us, but our ciw'iAsity
led.ua to ask lijm what he was going to do
with them. He answered that was
going to make a charm string, and cilrry it
with him for luck; he wanted fifty bnttons
or bonds to go ori it eventually, hut for
the present he did unit want but forlysnine;
he was to carry it with that number on it
for a certain length of time, on a certain
day in the week he was to call on his lady
love, and ask her to put on h charm,'if she
put on a button of a certain color, he
marry her, and forever have good luck
