COMPANY.
We presume it is not generally known
to our readers that (he last Legislature in
corporated a Telegraph Company, styled as
above. The incorporator* are Richard
Bradley, Daniel Callahan, Gen. Joseph
Finegan. B. F. Bruton, L. Carrington, D. P.
Holland and such others as may hereafter
become connected with it. We know all
the gentlemen at the head of this laudable
enterprise personally, and we venture to
say if the United States had have been pick
ed over, a more euerjetic, thorough-going
set of men could not have been found—their
names are a suficient guarantee that" the
work will commence and be carried on
successfully. We learn it is the intention
of the Corporators to meet at an early day
for the pm pose of organizing—after which
books of subscription will be opened in the
principal cities and towns throughout the
State. As Telegraph companies are pays
institutions, we have no doubt but what a
sufficient amount of stock will be taken, to
b«*gin the work at an early day. Under
the charter, tin; company has the right to
construct and maintain such lines of Tele
graph communication from any point or
points in the State of Georgia, that they,
may select. They also have power to con
struct lines of Telegraph communication in
any part of the United States, wherein by'
the laws of the United States, or’of any
State in the Union' the said Corporation
may be permitted by the laws of the U. S
or of any State.
The Charter gives the Company power
to set up their fixtures, or run ilyir lines
on any railway, road, or water-course—
the right to take private property’ of any
corporation of this State for the use of the
company, for the purpose mentioned.
The States of Virginia, North and South
Carrolina, Alabama, Mississppi and Louis
ianna, have already given to the company
the l ight of way, and by the time the or
ganization is perfect, they will have obtained
the right of way ihr ugh all of the South

our planting friends wish to invest their
surplus cash in an institution that will pay,
we advise them to take stock in the Inde.-

THE TURNER TRIAL
The trial of the MaclftkPostmaster, Turn
ner, charged with*forgery is still progress/*
ing. Up to Saturday evening, the
seemed to rely entirety upon proving that
J. Clarke Swayze, the principal witness
against tha prisoner, was devoid of moral
character, and not to be believed on oath—
though it seems that by Monday, the Court
had information that other important wit
nesses fox the defence would be introduced
The Court in order to give time for these
witnesses to appear, adjouned until lues
day morning.
Swayze, seems to hate got himself into
a bad box—so much for being too intimate
with the truly loil. Swayze has espoused
the cause not of Republican party of Geor-
Gia; but the negro. He is now reaping
his reward , several of the most influential
Colored men of Macon have k testified that
they would nut believe bun on oath.
The colored population of the South do
not i xpect, nor neither do they wish to be
put upon a social footing with the whites,
and whenever a white man, as in Swayze’s
case, loses his self-respect, and se< ks the
society of negros, they at once lofee all re
spect for him.
We do not doubt, but what the evidence
of Swayze is true, every word of it, and had
he not selected the negroes exclusively as
his associates, there is not one of them that
would dared have impeached his testimony.
If the defence succeeds in throwing, out
the testimony of Swayze, Turner-will prob
ably go unwhipt ot justice. .

We are constantly hearing complain
made of the extraordinary length of time is
consumed in procuring merchandise and
other articles from Savannah via Baiu
bridge. It is rarely that articles are leoeiv
ed in less than twenty days from the date,
of the order, and an invalid informs us that
medicines ordered from Savannah, l>v ex
press, over this rout are sometimes thirty
days in reaching Belscr’s Landing. Eetght
days are sufficient for the performance of
this trip, hot it is never accomplished itr
that time. The non -perfonilance is attri
butable to the carlessness and negligence
id those in charge of freight between Sa
vannah and Belser’s, and unless they im
prove; a large amount of freight w.U be
sent by the circultious routes of Columbus
or Cedar Keys, either of which'can be per
formed iu the same if not less time and the
came cost, Will our cotemporaries of the
Argus and Sun stir this matter?'
The above we clip from the Marianna
Courier of the 15th ,icst. There certainty
is no reason why* so much, time should be
consumed in transporting freight from Sa
vannah to Belser’s Lauding; provided
Steamboats run regularly, and right there,
we expect lies the difficulty. During the
Summer months'the Barnett line has mot
been running regular, and we would not
be at all surprised if Mariana freight had
not laid in the Railroad Depot, for two or
(three weeks at times, waiting for transpor
tation. We do not believe the Independ
ent line of steamers any freight
shipped over the Atlantic and Gulf Rail
road.
We think the Courier would be safe in
assuring its readers, that as soon as the
bus iness season opens, they will get their
freight from Savannah over the Gulf road,
iu at least six days.
Railroad Meeting in Lumpkin,
Last Satui day upon the occasion of the
completion of the survey to that point, a
vast assemblage of the people of Stewart
met at the Court house* to offer material
aid to the enterprise. . *
Judge Wimberly occupied the chair, and
speeches were made by Col* A. Hood on
the part of the directory, H. H. Jones,dß<v.
A. L Hamilton D. D!, Capt. Tumliu ai|d
Mr. Bell.
We never saw a meeting, more deeply in
terested and absorbed in any subject. Col.
llarkie also being called upon , gave a des
tail account of the topography of the coun
try*fron Baiubridge to-Lnmpkim.
He said, no region could be more favor
able for the Construction of a Railroad, from
the inital point u> the hanks of the Pataula..
In Stewart, the graling would be Very
much heavier, but lie believed the road bed
aeiross the country, about 21 miles, could
be constructed for $200,000. Dr. Hamil
ton’s and Mr. Bell’s dibits Covered the
whole ground, and elicited prolonged ap
plause from the crowded audience.
The Doctor took well with the people
and was very happy in some of his hits.
Cnpt, Tumliu spoke briefly but to the
point, Col. Hood too gave a satisfactory
account of the operation of the Board, and
pledged their unvvearing diligence and
fidelity in the discharge of the important
trusts confided to them. SBO,OOO were
raised, and it is believed that the entire
amount, for the county of Stewart will be
forth coining at an early day,
The Board of Directors held a meeting on
this day also, and Col. Bruton its energetic
president, announced that lie bad sucoeed
ed,jn negotiating with one of the banks of
Columbus ou the most favorable terms, for
all the funds which would be needed for
several months to come.
The survey will reach Columbus be for;-,
the close of the. present mouthy and the Bo’ard
will then reassemble in that city and pros
bably take steps for fi e early letting out of
a large portion of the grading of the road.
The county seems fully aroused to the
importance of this great undertaking and
we trust ere long ground will be broken,
aird the work of construction begin in good
earnest. — Cuthbert Appeal.
