[Written for the Sun;] A CAT-BE-GORT. by mbs. tabithyann umnm. ’Twas midnight o’er the feepy town And yellow moonbeams like a veil Had covered all— when in my gown I started at an awful wall. I thought the Kc Ktux demon clan With ghastly ories were at my gate, I seized ajwash-tub glorious plan, And grandly rushed to meet my fate. I flung my curtains wide in fright, And near I spied upon some rails Ten Thomas Cats, black, speckled white, With blood shot eyes and lofty tails. My night cap with its charming frill Alarmed a screech owl iu the trees. But fearless, on my window sill I watched the combat, in the breeze. » On they came with dreadful cries, With tails erect, in wild airay! They pawed the fence, with flashing eyea, And far the noise was borne away Then came the shock, each Thomas clan, Went plunging o’er the moonlit lea, Some bled and yelled, while others ran, While some retreated up a tree. The clock struck two, and still the din Re»echv>ed where the dim moon shone, Soon all was hushed—the ghastly grin, The dying shriek, the sobbing groan. ’ In cap and gown, with timid step, I sought the battle field to view, Saw where the Thomas Legions swept With ears erect and fiery mew. While far around in heaps there lay Eyes, ears and noses, and toe nails, While floating o’er the battle way Hung bloody mists, of fur and tails. Aghast I left this dreadful scene And sought my couch in peace to lay Resolved no more the Thomas scream Or Ku Klux yell should me dismay. £ir<rtel Satire. Our Southern Home Circle.
