M. Clark, presiding. Quite an ; ntelligent, good looking body of gentlemen were pressed into their country’s service as jurors, some of whom made very wry "tabes at the prospect be* fore them. His Honor, iff his charge to the Grand Jury made gotfie excellent and pertinent remarks upon the importance of Bainbvidge as a commercial point, and the necessity of building up railroad bdm munications with it. Members of the bar from abroad present, were Richard Hobbs of Albany, A. T. Mclntyre., Hansel and Wright of Thomasville, and Y. B. Baughn of Colquitt. • The Court was engaged pretty much during the first week iti trying old ejectment cases, so ancient that the memory of lawyers engaged were at fault as to whether the plaintiffs and defendants were dead or alive. The sfecdnd week has been devoted to criminal business. The case of the State against Allen Jeter, charged with a too special fondness for other peo* pies beef, was the first case taken up. Whitely, Solicitor General for the State, Allen and Hines for the defence. Found Guilty. The next was the case of Bulljr Parluim, colored, charged with rape upon a negro woman, Found guilty, and recom mended to thc meicy of the Court. &imd & Craw ford, and Campbell & Gurley for the defence, White ly for State. Counsel for defendant moved for a new trial. The next case taken np was that of General Amos, colored, charged with the murder of Drury Russell, colored. Albert Dale, colored, cliargod with burglary, plead guilty to larceny from the house. Alfred Car ter, Colored; who induced a mule, not his own, to follow hied off, against the consent of bis owuer, plead guilty to the offence of horse stealing. The jury in the case of General Amos sot murder, found the’prisoner guilty and recommended him to the mercy of the Court. Allen Jeter was sentenced to' the chain gang for twelve months. The Court was en gnged in the trial of William Loyd, colored, for burglary up to the hour of our going to press. The New Wab Secretary.—(Jen. Bel* knap, who, the telegraph informs us, has been called to Washington as Secretary of War, is the con of the late General Wil*> Ham Belknap, one of the most gallant, and able officers in the army of the United States. The senior General and his wife were bdth natives of Newbyrgh, Orange county, New York. The wife was a Miss Clark; and is still living ; the btisband died a few years since, before the late war, in the West, very suddenly. He was a man of splendid physique, tall, of powerful frame, tvith large, Well knit mumbles; regu* lar Teatnres, and a Very pleasant aitd amia ble expression of face, and his countenance was a true index of character. No man was ever more universally loved and re* spected ifi or out o| the army. The present General Was his only son j the writer knew him as a child, but ifi hot personally acquainted with hiS early histo* ry. At the breaking oOt of the late War, the paternal blood manifested itself, and abandoning the practice of the law, life join ed the army, and rapidly rose to the high grade which lie now holds. If, as is said, "blood always tells,” the new Secretary of War will most certainly discharge the du* ties of hi* high office with credit to himself, and the entire satisfaction of the army, his brother officers, and the whole country.-*- Lyhchburg Republican.
