JOSH BILLINGS AND THE LEKTUR COM Minx Lotters'/which pas* from great men are often wi*( to owlisiiuess, and so sneenss'- fully as to treat beautifully npon everything Imt lit** point at “junoo.” / Satr Pot s», Feb. 10, 18G7. J.Bil/ing*, E-<s. : I n*n instntuud by mir association to inquire ©I you, and solicit a repiy, if yon con IQ read a discourse before ortr lyceum this whiter, and if so, at what time, on wbat ©object, and upon wh it terms. Most respectfnll\, yours, Ezra Surra, Cur. 1 Sec y. PoKtesY, Feb. 12, 1807. Smith, Mi Hear : This day. at 10 o'clock a. m , I cum in contact with yonr letter, and was real glad to hear I rum ytt. ll<»w do yu like being Our. Sek. of a Ly Assoei ? It is alight, pretty bizzinvss, and don't require much capital. Let me ask yon if yon are cay relashon to Jake Smith, the hatter. If you are, forgit it, for Jake is a common knss. The Smiths are a gml family, and pres ▼til more perntiskus than cuy kind ov folks 1 kno uv, but it would lie iioiiatorai in tiie highest if there wasn’t sum, where ilia was ao thick that was wuss than Ihe rest. Did you ever read history, Ezra ? If you didn't, you will be surprised to hear that John Smith married Pokahontas, the daugh ter of powhattan, the injin boss. The way this happened was so: Smith was about getting slewed, when Pokahoti tas went in and bill Hat on him. Old Pow hattan give it up, and Pokahontas had Smith, and settled down and went into the Jnjin bizzines* in a small way, on her own hunk. This is the jist of the story. ’Tis one of the most affect ingest stories on file. Yon ought to read history, Ezra ; it will learn yu in for mush mi, and giv yu a knoll edge of edneashun. Forgot to state that John Smith lived somewhere in Pensylvany at the time this traiisakshuu with Fokcrhuntss look place, •ml if he ain’t dead, probably lives there now. There is one fust rate tiling about history : it is always tine. If it ain't true, it ain't history ; so if yu it oust, yu never have to unharness. But most poetri and piktorials and novs •Is lie wttßl than east wind ; the fuller u man gets of them overnight, the more room thar iz in him the next, (lay for sum more. John Smith, who had the trausakshun with Pukerliontas, had an immense invoice es boys. There is thirteen of that name in •nr town this morning, besides several who have either died or gone to Denver City. Did it ever strike you, Ezra, that death was one of the most remarkable that could happeu to a man ? A man may bo rito.h, and kno history just like slanj aeks for breakfast, and l>e handsome, atne to lift a ton wilhont thinks i|ig r but death beats all these just as easy aa biting craters. Dte&th seem! to be as far ass man can git ; when a man acquires that thorough*, ly his ambisliiu seems to be satisfied. One man can be riteller and lilt more than another, but be can’t bo any more deader. lam glad there is one thing in this world that is cnttiT for man. Speaking of man, Ezra, dew yew kons nider him a success yet, or has be got to try again ? History has a good deal tew say about lean Mat dot:' r i allude lew his success. Advw, Ezra*. Se was delighted and surprised, and after his own recovery, which soon occurred, determined, if possible, to procure the sole right to manufacture and sell it in the United States. The result of his labors was a glorious success for himself and suffering humanity, for the celebrated PLANTATION BITTIX2 was thus made known to the world. PLAN TATION SITTERS being an article of real merit, founded upon new principles, and relying wholly upon the vegetable world for its medicinal effects, worked a rapid revolu tion in the history of medicine, and became as a household word all over the civilized world. The cabalistic S. T.—lß6o— Z. was a talisman of health, and the demand for the PLANTATION BITTERS soon far exceeded the abilities of the proprietors to supply. Notwithstanding the large importation of St. Croix Rum, made expressly for the com pounding of these Bitters, the quantity wa3 inadequate. It therefore became necessary that arrangements upon an extensive scale abroad should at once be made, and an agent was dispatched to St. Thomas for that purpose. He was fortunate in securing and leasing several plantations on some of the largest and most productive estates on the island. Houses, stills and presses were erected as if by magie, which utterly “ acton* ished the natives.” The services of experienced men and natives of the island were pro cured, and very soon the#roprietors of the PLANTATION BITTERS were in a position to supply their laboratory with all the perfectly pure St. Croix Rum needed in manufac turing the GREAT DYSPEPTIC TONIC AND INVIGORATOR. The above cut represents the natives crushing the sugar-cane and otherwise preparing it for the stills and presses. - As an antidote to Povsr and Ague, Intermittent and Malarious Fevers, Dyspepsia, and ether kindred diseases, the use of the PLANTATION BITTERS is unsurpassed in the history es the world. Over five million bottle? are disposed of annually. They aye adapted to old and young, male and female, ‘They are agreeable in taste, and always produce an immediate beneficial result, ” 4 A. Davis.
