THE SERES.4DE.
BT PHEI.IM o'DOWD.
At a house by tall trees shaded, *
Away in a Jersey grove,
Young Jonathan serenaded
His buxom lady love.
He stripped himself of Us duster,
And swigging a flask of gin.
His courage he tried to muster,
And thus did lie begin.
“Get out of your bed, dear HeUie,
Te gladden your love sick beau,
And list to the amorous ditty,
I’m t-ingin’ to-night for you.
•
“Git up and come to the window
So I see yourifijee so fair—
There’s no one—not even Beliuder—
With you I would .compare.
“The moon is up in the sky love,
And its face is round atid blight,
And it says that you and 1 love
Should be out enjoying its light,
“The stars are at recreation,
Velocipeding the skies,
And Hjtarkeing emulation
Os your more brilliant eyes.
“But whence does this odor come love.
That now salutes my nose ?
Though flowers around me bloom love
’Tis uot from them it blows.
“ 'Tis not from the sweet carnation
That grows here underneath. •
’Tis the fragrant ex imitation
Os your delicious breath.
“Oh, rise from your downy pillow,
And come to ny eagar arms,
And under the spreading willow
We’ll talk, of nature’s charms.
“Get out of this riokettv bastile,
Aud I’ll cany you on my back
Away to my lordly castle.
By the murmuring Hackensack.
“Forsake your parental tyrant,
Who tortures and plagues you so.
And fly with your young aspirant
Who watts for you here below.
’‘l know that your sire has stamps, love,
So hasten and come away—
-1 want to get over the swamps love
Before tire dawn of day.
For others I have no thought, o f
Even a look, as you know well”—
Just then a tub of hot water
Around his shoulders foil !
THE STATE FAIR.
The Telegraph of the 20lb thus speaks
of the
THE FAIR.
Whatever opinion may ho expressed to
the contrary, the exhibition itself is triitg
nificent. It far exceeds in magnitude the
anticipations of the Telegraph. The whole
of the iminence building—the Laboratory
—is filled with trophies of art ~and inge
nuity, and the upper floor—a hall between
three and tour hundred feet in length, i<-
crowed with interesting objects. Syiendid
pianos, costly furniture, beautiful pictures,
plate, jewlry, embroideries,cloths, clothing
lor ladies aii<f gentlemen, books, carpeting,
boots and shoes, caockery harness, plants
fruit* confectionaries, preserves, and many
hundred articles of household and personal
adornment and utility are here in endless
detail.
Below in the first story the show in ma
chinery ami agricultural implements is lit.-
eraly grand, and fills the whole space.
Outside are horse powers, cotton presses,
ploughs, wagons carriages, stock and fowls
besides a great many outside shows of all
kinds.
The sight of tiie'amphitheatre or hipodrome
was literally magnificent. That imnienuc
cicrl« built to accormaodato ten thousand
people was crowded, not a foots’space was
osL It was aliving bank of human flowers
—brilliant with all hues and radiant’s with
Georgia loveliness. The hipodroine con
tained eigh or ten thousand. The ground
outside was thronged. The laboratory
building was literally a press above aud
below, and Huff’s Rink, outside and inside
was a sea of life. The whole represented
an assembladge of fifteen thousand people,
and constituted one of the most brilliant
scenes we ever beheld.
WHAT TUB NORTHSBN VIBITOUT SAY.
Every visitor has been struck with ad -
miration at the appearance of the popular
throng at the State Fair. Colonel Knoxi
who, as a private citizen, and as Presi
dent for some years past of the State and
a county agricultural society in Pennsyl
vania, is very fatuilliar with such gather
ings, says he never saw one to compare
with it iu point of intelligence, "order so
briety, good manners, and the* splendid
physique of the people, women an I men.
Colonel Forney and others of our North
ern visitors made substantially the same
admission. Sulou Robinson, of the New
York Tribune, who has been in attendance
upon fairs for a lifetime, says the appear
ance of such a concourse, so well and rich
ly dressed, in so short a lime after a ruin
ous war, is the most wonderful illustration
of the recuperative energy of a people lie
ever saw He could never, h »ve believed
it had he not seen it. When we asked him
how toey* compared with similar gather
ings in other parts of the country, bis terse
reply was, “As well as the best.**
