The corp of Engineers of the above road, has
arrived and thoroughly organized, with Colonel
Clarke of Richmond, Ya., as Cfhief Engineer, and
Gen. Walker of the same place as Assistant. The
Engineers will commence the permanent location
of the route immediately, and the contract for the
building of the first twenty miles will be let out in
the next ten or fifteen days. One of the party’s
who pioposes to make a hid for the .contract says
(and what he says is so) he can complete the road
from this point to Colquitt easily in foui months.
Now Citizens of Miller, Calhoun, Randolph and
Stewart counties, don’t be backward in paying
up your installments, you may rest assured with
the assistance you have promised, thfe road will
be*bui!t speedily.

Cotton Speculators. —A party of colored indi
viduals of our county wishing to go jnto.thq cotton
business, and not having a sufficient amount of
capital to start upon, concluded that to commence
the business they would purchase a bale while the
owner was
“Sweetly sleeping, the dreamy hours away”
Consequently they procured a cart, and went
eight miles into the country on last Saturday night
and .“lilted” a bale belonging to Mr. William Pow
ell, which they brought into town, and stored in a
corn -crib belonging to one of the African race—we
have no idea they wanted to conceal it, but only
intended to wait for a rise in the market, before
offering it for sale.
Mr Powell was inforfhed early next tnoriiihg by
a colored man in. his employment, of what had
happened—not likeing to dispose of his cotton
without having some hand in the transaction, he
immediately started in pursuit, and tracked the
wagon to the place mentioned, and found the cot
ton. ,
There was a rise in cotton sooner than the par
ties who had it in possession anticipated, Mr,
Powell entered the market and run about six,hun
dred pounds up, well—as high as a wagon body,
and hauled it off to Jackson’s warehouse,
Several parties were arrested, but only one con
victed, William Grey; the said individual was pre
sented with a watch—no ball and chain, and sent
as a recruit to Russell’s Brigade for 100 days.
We advise all planters who do not wish to sell
their cotton at present, to send it to some ware
house, and pay insurance on it, rather than run the
risk of its being burnt or stolen.
A Number of Choice Suits for Gentlfmen
—Competing in style and quality with
any that can be found in this market.,, are
for sale at Steininger and Eckstein’s Flint
River Store.
