HOW SHE PAID HER DEBT.
‘Oh, Charloy, Charley, how could you do
such a thing ?
Lilias Way land’s round cheek was
hl.tiiched to tin unwonted whiteness, as she
stood before her brother in the close, cramp
ed room which constituted her so e home.
Charley V\ avland, a handsome, dissipa
ted looking youih of two or three and
twenty, with bold black eyes, and a men v
mouth that seemed made only to smile,
stood opposite her, looking half- repentant,
half-defiant, as she spoke,
'Lily, I CouUl’nt help it. I tell yon I was
bard up. A fellow must have money ; y«>n
women don't know anything about the
temptations and necessities of the world 1’
‘But, Charley ’she faltered, ‘do you know
how this sum -j world, as you phrase it, looks
at the deed you have just committed? Oh,
Charley,’and her voice grew low and item*
nlous, ‘lt is forgery !’
‘Nonsense, Li 11 1 It’s only borrowing a
part of old Gleitctoss’ unused millions, to
aid my needs. I wrote and asked him for
cash, and he, the unmanly lout, relused.
Well, what could be expect after lilts, but
that I should help myself?'
Lilias wrung her slender hands.
‘How dared you, Charley ? That a Way
land should come to this !* she wuihd,
‘Dared !’ ha echoed recklessly ; ‘it was
but a stroke of the pen, alter all ; and old
Glencross would be a paltrier miser than l
take him to be, if lie makes a fuss about a
matter of five hundred dollars !’
‘lt is the light and the justice of the
tiling,’ cr»ed Lilias, almost frantically. ‘lf
we could pay him it: any way ; but I have
sold everything that remains of our former
wealth. See 1’ and she looked around tin'
miserable apartment, ‘see bow I live.
night I sat up until midnight sewing, to
have a little money to pay the rent. I have
not a jewel left, nor a trinket 1’
‘Oh, bother, Lill I If old Glencross cuts
up rough, it is only taking a run across the
water. I know lots of ship captains that
would stow me away under their holds,
almost any moonlight night.*
Lilias looked despairingly at him. Was
it. then, irn|o»Gblo to make hi in compre*
lieud the nn r*l obliquity of the deed lie bad
just committed ?
‘But I can’t stay fooling hero,’ observed
the young man, with a toss of his black
curls, ‘I must bo off about my business.
Good-bye, Lill Give ns a kiss, my girl 1
Except that you’re uncommon fond of lec -
turing a fellow, you’re wot a bud sister in
the main.’
After be had gone, Lilias sal down to try
and realize the new situation in which she
and her brother were placed. All now
depended upon tbe spirit in which Paulas
Glencross should receive this new en
croachment upon his purse and patience.
Lily had never seen this distant relation,
yet she had formed an opinion of him in her
imuost mind, as we at! are apt to do of un
seen persons whom we hear a great deal
about; and whenever she thought of Mr.
Glencross, the in:mage of a hook-nose old
man, yellow skinned and cadaverous, on*
gaged in sorting over piles of mortgages,
or counting bags of gold, suggested itself
to her mental eyp.
‘But lie must be human, at least,* thought
Lily, in the agony of her distress. ‘lf Igo
to himself, and tell him just what poor
Charley's necessities were, and how good
hearted he really is, in spite of all his faults
and thoughtlessness—ii I say frankly to
him that I have no money nor jewels to
reimburse, him, hut that 1 will stay and
work in the kitchen, until I have discharge
ed toe horrible debt, surely, 0 surely he
cannot have the heart to refuse* 1 Can do
a great many things. I can sew and em
broider, and I could make good bread and
biscuit, and poor mamma always said I
was a good housekeeper, and if Mr. Glen
cross is really so miserly as Charley iliiuks,
he would look at the economy ol the thing'
At least, it is worth trying V
So favorably did Lilias Wayland regard
this idea, broached 111 her sore extremity,
that in two days from the evening in which
she had bidden g jod-byo to her handsome*
reckless brother, she stepped from the ears
at the New York depot, dressed in a sober
brown suit, that made her look like a
shrinking little mouse, with her carpet bag
in her hands.
A little inquiry sufficed to bring her to
the street where Mr. Glencross resided—a
stately avenue, lined on either side with
elegant palaces* the like of which Lily had
never seen in the plainer city where sh<*
hatl been born and bred. Her heart sank
within her, as she stood on the broad brown
stone steps leading np to the carved n>s«-
wood door, on which a silver plate bore the
name of‘Glencross’ in old English letters.
Then, coloring, deeply at her own cow*-
ardly tremulonsness and utter lack of all
resolution and enterprise* she rang the
bell, to settie the question at once aud defi
nitely.
‘ls Mr v Glencross at home ? she asked of j
the colored servant who answered the sum
mons.
Yes, Mr. Glencross was at home; vrould
the young lady enter? And Lilias was
shown into an apartment curtained with
heavy folds of purple satin, and carpeted
with velvet of the same rich color—an
apartment whose dusky splendor made her
think of all the stories she had read of en
chanted palaces in the realms of fairy
land.
As Lilias sat on the silken sofa, waiting
with a throbbing heart for the appearance
of her unknown cousin, the thought stole
into her mind that he was not so much ol
a "miser” after all ; and then came a sick
sort of misgiving that her mission was nil
in vain.
‘For surely,’ she thought, glancing trem
ulously round the elegant apartment, ‘lie
will not want any one lu make bread, or

When Lilias wrote her happy letter

pleasant postcript, and Charley W tvlaini
knew that his season of peril was over !
