•A Double Tragedy in Liberty County
Mclntosh, Libbrty Couny, December 3,1870
I write to inform you of a terrible trag
ody recently enacted in this county. On
yesterd ay morning, Deputy Sheriff Stafford,
with a possce of four men attempted to ar>
rest a noted desperado named Sauls, who
had been guilty of many acts of v.llany*
Repeated attetnps had been made to se
cure him, but in vain. On yesterday every.
: recanlion was made. The partysMiampcd
out the night before, and, about daylight
surrounded the house* As soon as the
sheriff entered Sauls fired upon him almost
instantly. A young man named J. A.
Mann, a student at the Hineville Academy,
who bad volunteered on the posse, was also
killed by Sauls with the remaining bun-el.
Sauls then made his escape, and has not
yet been arrested. M.
Later. —Since the above was put in type
we have further details of the tragedy from
parlies just id from Libcr.ty county. The
;jjove statement i* correct, as far as it goes
Yesterday, a party went in pursuit of
the desperado, Andrew Sauls, and after
proceeding some four miles from the house,
found him dead in the woods from tho
wounds received in his recontre with the
officers. Thus ends a bloody affair, which
has created no little excitement in the
county and brought deep distress to sever
al household.
Glory Enough for 7,500 Men.
When Grant forced General Lee from
Petersburg, a wonderful spectacle was pres
sented to the world; and its features have
not faded, and will never fade* Out of that
event small dotatoes have sprouted into gi
gantic “ pumpkins and one of those veg
etables has been airing bis barn-burning
reputation among the camd-kettles and
campfollowers of the old despot, William
nt Prussia, By the way we observe that
the Prussians are stealing' walches and trin
kets from the French, and burning down
their houses. That’s a logical sequence of
Sheridan’s presence with the army of the
King.
Generali Early, at a late meeting of the
Army of Northern Virginia, at Richmond
sa.d that General Lee told him that lie had
only 7,500 mm with arms when he stnender
ed at Appomattox Court-house* And of
the incompetent man who accepted lus
swoud, at the head of an army of 200,000
men, with reserves equally numerous, we
have made a President, in reward for his
services, and call him great, while the hero
baffled him so long with so small a band of
Spartans is begrudged a flag at half-mast
when he died. But thank Heaven, he was

TIIE REACTION.
A Washington dispatch to lue New
York IleralJ says.
One of the most singular reasons yet
advanced for the ligty Republican vote in
some parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland
at the late elections is that the best Repubs
Means would not go to the polls with their
colored brothers. Government officials
now in Washington, who were personally
in the success of the party, and who par
ticipated in the campaign, say that it is an
absolute fact that the prejudice against the
mixing with the newly enfranchised was
stronger on the part of Republicans than
on the part of the Democrats.
The Republican papers iu Pennsylvania
and Maryland confirm the above. They
say the colored element, instead of adding
strength to the Republican pasty, was an
ingredient of weakness ; ail of which is
simply evidence that the reaction, which it
was seen must come sooner or later, has
begun. As the passions and resentments
arising out of tiro war grow weak, the
sense o\mor.iScatton at the negro having
been %oliticjd
