Ora New Local Column.— We have concluded
to devote a column of this, our fourth page, to
city and ctranty affairs, in order that we make our
paper more interesting and entertaining to local
readers. This nfiw feature will add fnJ&i&t to oaf
advertisements, {baking the rocarn paoi as prdrfa
inent as any other in point of position. Judging
from the Opinions of our patrons and the press,
we belie?* the Stm to be one of thi bdet local pa

to keep it up to that standard Our first page will,
also, be rendered more attractive by a column of

A FbeSfnt to the Stonewall Fire Company.—
At the last regu'ar meeting of the above company
the occasion of the opening of their new hall —
Department Chief I'ngiLeer Id ward R. Peabody,
appeared before them, and presented an elegant
chandelier, as a token of his friendship and es
teem for the company over which he had so long
presided, as Foreman Resolutions, expie-sive of
the thanks of.the company, were ordered drawn
up, to be placed upon the record, and • published
in the city papers.
The “.Stonewall” Comp ant's Hall. —The hall
of this gallant fire company has been completed
and, for the .first time since that event, on Wed
nesday evening, the sth inst,, they met there
We were-present, and much gratified at this evi
dene© of the prosperity oi said bodv. The hall is
one of the neatest and cosiest we ever- saw, and is
thoroughly vent ilated. It is nicely ceiled over
head, and the walls are embellished with p - per of
elegant design.- The furniture is tasty and dura
ble. The wails are also ador.ied with pictures,
suggestive of the life of a fiiemaD, for which the
Secretary of the company is responsible. Sus_
pended from the centre of the ceiling bangs a
magnificent chandelier, the gift of th.e Chief of
the Fiie Department, which sheds its brilliant
rays into the remotest recesses of the room. r i he
expense o! fitting up this hall was borne by the
company.

A Medical Studext— v haep Pistol Practice. On
a bright Sabbath morning, not long ago, th* lone
room of a gay and festive bachelor friend of ours,
Who don't stay a thousand miles from the Flint
Store, was the scene of a serio comic occurrence,
troich we will relate.
Contiguous to our fib nd’s domicile, is the sane
turn sanctorum •fa medb al student, who also lays
iims-lf down there at nights to rest, anil to pry
into the intricacies of his chosen profession. !-aid
student is, what might be termed, a maniac upon
the subject of Anatomy, for hy his close ie earcii
es be has found on what brittle threads hang the
boon of life - consequently, he has the f<-ar of that
‘mysteriously dark-and unknown future’ continu
ally before his vision. It was soon in the morn
ing. after having spent the night among clanking
skeletons, and pickled specimens Os de id human
ity, in prosecuti g hi- studies, that our hero, wi k
heavy eyes and throbbing temples, sought our
bachelor friend’s retreat.
bilently he glided into the room, his mi'd preg

had just opened his ‘peeper>. - suddenly sprang up
with the desperation of a madman, then taking a

against the wa 1, crying in a loud voice, ••oh. God,
I‘am shot 1 Murder !” This exclamation, how
ever, had no effect on Bach, for he fired the six
remaining shots in quick succession, between t.e
legs, though the fingers, and into the hat of his
victim, nailing him to the wall after the manner of a
Chinese juggler Throw hi gas de the and scharged

came near dyi *g of she r fright.
The above is a truthful narration, and the joke
played on the student rather too practical - out at
the same time demonstrates exquisite skill in the
use of the pistol.

CONSUMPTION-
Its Cure and its Preventive.
BY J. H. SCIJENCK, M. D.
if ANT a human being has passed away, for
iVI wh -ee d*ath there was no otner reason than
the neglect of known and pioven means of cute.
Those near and dear to family and friends are
sleeping the dreamless slumber into which, had
they calmly adopted

and availed thetn'e’vc? of this wonderful effica
cious medicines, they would not have fallen.
Dr. Schenck has in his own cm e proved that
Wherever sufficient vitality remains, that vitality,
by his medicines and his directions fur tbteif tisfc,
is quickened into healthful vigor.
In this statement there is nothing presumptuong-

Dr. Schenck’s medicine* is as CliHplS as it is un
failing. Its phylosoply requires do argument.—>
It is self-assuring, self-convincing.

They respdiia io tHfc' marrafib action of the liver.
Here then comes the culminating result, and the
setting in, with all its distressing symptoms, of
CONSUMPTION.
The Mapdfake Pills are composed of one of Na
ture’s noblest gifts—the Po’aophilifrffi Fetfafum
They possess all the blood-searching, alterative
properties of calomel, but unlike calomel, they
“LEAVE NO STING BEHIND. ”
The wCfrk of cure isn *w bggining. TJie vitiated
and mucoifs dt'pMts in the lowels and in the ali
mentary canal ftre ejected. The liver like a clock,
is wound up. It arouses from its torpidity. The
stomach acts responsively, ana the patient begins
to feel (hat he is getting at last,
A -dJPPLY OF GOOD BLOOD.
The Seaweed Tonic, in conjunction .with the Pills
•permeates and assimilates with the food. Chi life
c-itioii is now progressing without its previous tor
tures. Digestion becomes painless, and the cure
is seen to be at nan I. There is no more flatulence
no exacerbation of the stomach. An appetic sets
in.
Now comes the greatest Blood Purifier ever given
bv an indulgent father fosuffering man Schenck’s
Pulmonic Syrup comes in to perform its functions
and to hasten and complete the Cure. It enters at
once up -n its \v >rk. - Nature cannot be cheated.
Jt collects and ripens the impaired and diseased
portions of the lungs. In the form of gathei ings.
it prepairs them for expectoration, audio! in a
very short time tlie malady is vanquished, the
rotten throne that it occupied is renovated and
made new, and the patient, in all the .dignity of
regained vigor, steps forth to enjoy the manhood
or womanhood that was.
GIVEN UP AS LOST.
Tbe second thing is. the patients must stay in
a warm room until thev get well; it is almost im
possible to prevent taking cold when the lungs
are diseased, but it must be prevented or a cure
cannot be effected. Fresh air andridingmit.es
peri illy in this section of the cmmtiy in the hill
and winter sca.-mi, are all wrong. Physicians who
recommend that course lose their patients, if their
lungs are badly diseased, and yet, because they are
in the house, they mind riot sit down quiet * they
must.walk about tiie ro m ad much and as fast as
the strength will bear, to get up a good circulation
of blood. The patients must keep in good spirits
be determined to get well, 'i bis has a.great de and
to do with the appetite, and is the great [point to
gain.
To despair of cure affbr such evidence of Us pos
sibility in the worst cases and moral certainty
in all others, is sinful. Dr. Schenck s personal
statement to the facility of his own cure was in
these modest words •
“Many years airo I was in tha last stages of
consumption; confined to my bed. and at one time
my physicians said I eouhl not live u week ; then,
like a drowning man catching at gttuws, 1 heard
of and obtained the prepartior.s which i now of
ler to the public, and they made a perfect cure of
ine. It seemed to me that I could feel them pen
etrate my whole system. 'Jlity soort ripentdthe
matter in my lungs, and 1 would spit up more
than a pint of offensive yellow matter every morn
ing for a long time.
“As soon as that began to subside my cough,
fevei, pain, and night sweats all began to leave uie,
and my appetite became so great that it was with
difficulty that I could keep from eating too much..
I soon gained my strength, and have grown in
flesh ever since.”
‘I was weighed shortly after my recovery,” ad--
ded the Doctor,‘‘then looking like a mete skele
ton; my weight was only nipety-seven pounds ;
my present weight is two hundred twenty-five
(225) pounds, and fur yeats I have enjoyed unin
terrupted health ”

visits to New Yo.k and Boston. He or his son.
