BainUridge, Cuthbert and

Railroad Companies.
We are tudebu'd to Hon. B. F. Bruton,
for fcrsetocttiar containing the chart era, and
giving a detailed account of the organiza
tion *t.id future prospects of the above
named railroads.
This circular (which we trust trill be
placed in the bands of every mao who
feels an interest in these roads) shows cou
cluaively to the most skeptical, the great
odvamages to be derived by their construc
tion, and more especially to the citizens of
Southwestern Georgia.
VVe notice from a map appended to the
circular, respecting these two roads of
which Mr. 11. I. Kimball is President, that
they run nearly doe North, aud is by far
the'fhortest route from St. Marts and Ap
alachicola, Fla., v;a. Buinbridge, Columbus,
Atlanta, and other points northward to
■Cincinnati, Ohio„thus.placing the cotton
growing sections of Georgia and Florida,
in direct communication with the great
provision marts of the Weft, thereby ena
bling onr planters (who do not keep their
meii houses and corn cribs at borne) to
procure their supplies at much cheaper
rales.
TBS distance'from ApaTa <& icoTa V F«a.
Cineinati by tfic route proposed is about
SOft-milcH, and from Apalachicola to Ha
vana K S4Q, yo&kiag the distance between
lldvauh, I,S4|> miles, which
places 4 Oincmdti ! * very boar'2oo-miles near
er Havana than New York, and by the
present and prospective routes will shorten
the distance between Bain bridge and the
last named city about 175 mil 1 ?, and give
to the people of Southwestern Georgia an
outlet in every conceivable direction.
tV-ith all the apparent advantage of
thesa roads in view, and the manif. st dn\
termination of the President to do his ut
most to build them, ought to instill into the
citizens.of this section a firm resolution to
do every thing in their power to aid him.
sJfie, engines, iron &,c.,.fW the road from

is
that the President is relying

The prospect for the farmers of this por

The depot of the Brunswick and Albany
Railroad has finally been located -on the
Frith lot, in a very good place. The route
of this road through the city ia a very for
tunate one. We understand ijp embank
ment or excavation will be necessary with
in the corporate.limits.
Ihe health of our city good.
The scarlet’fever, which has caused an un
usual arnoant of sickness for some months
past, we are happy to say, has apparently
left us, aud we hear very little about it
now.
Our city feels the effects of
having a few hundred laborers on the rail
roads eating rations from her market. At
this time we suppose at least eight hun
dred bands draw their provisions from
Cuthbert. Contractors are finishing up
their work on the Brunswick rnd Albany
Railroad every day, and taking other sec-
tions or removing their hands*to ottr other
road—the majority taking the latter course,
as nearly all the unfinished sections be
tween Cuthbert and Albany'lffe already
f under contract. The Ba>i?6ri<fge. Cuthbert
and Columbus Railroad is also being push
ed ahead with commendable activity.
From ibis city sonih about ten miles are j
nearly ready for the eross\ties, another ten
miles, a little furLber off, is also nearing
completion. The engineer corps began
the survey of this road from this point to

The Oldest Yet —The Hillsborough, (N.
C.) Recorder of the 9th instant* says
‘Mrs Lydia Shankiin, probably the oldest
person in this State, died at her residence
in this county on Friday last. Site was
about 112 years old. Was a grown woman
during the Revolutionary war. This good
old lady attended the organization of
Orange Presbytery at Hnwfield church,
September 1770, and was very anxious to
attend in centenial meeting in 1870 ; but
the gay girl of 1770. found herself bowed
down with age in 1870, aud was unable to
attend the meeting.’
Mayor Hoffs Economical Ideas.— The
following* extract from Mayor Huff s ad
dress to the cit iz-ns of Macon shows that
he is wide awake to the interes of the city:
The poliev of issuing more bonds nta\
be urged and anvised by some, but in my
humble judgment the bonded debt is a..
ready in excess of-what *»it should be.
About one half million doilars have al
ready been expended by the city authori
ses of Macon in building up railroads and
fosteringother enterprises, for which the
bonds of the city have been issued, and to
day not one dollar of all these investments
is interest-paying or profitable to the city
in any way except as an enterprise to be
viewed aud valued iy .the prospective.
There is no immediate money or relief in
any of it, while the interest account
against the city of Macdu, growing oat of
these investments, for which bonds
issued, absorbs about one half of the city
revenue. Then why increase the bonded
,debt ?
Thejre is but little justice, and less wis
dom, in placing upon posterity a debt in
curred by our extravagance and ill-guided
judgment, an extravagance and debt which
we cannot now find the courage and the
manhood to discontinue, or the tact and
ability to liquidate and arrange.
Very respectfully,
VV, A. Hoff, Mayor.
