It appears that, after all, the mormons
hold the winning card. The Court which
has been so vigorously prosecuting the
Saints is bankrupt, aud it devolves upon
the Mormon Legislature to furnislf the lub

have thus far failed to do this; and as Radi

What a Macon Editor Says.
Col. H. H. Jones, of the Macon
graph, writing to his paper from Savannah
on the 26th, says.
The Atlantic and Gnlf Railroad is doing
as immense business in lumber, and its
wise President has taken special puns to
foster this branch of trade. Within a
abort period thirty<«fivej million feet of
ranging timber, plank, ship's spars, etc ,
have been transported to the sea, and the
depot at Savannah resembles a huge city
knocked into pi. Ihe extension of the
track to tide water has been a great bless
ing to the whole lumber trade.
The state owns a mil ion of dollars in
this great enterprise,**™! if ever State aid
for any internal improvement was justifia
ble, (wfcich we are not wholly prepared to
admit,)it should be freely voted to extend
the road to Mobile, its legitimate terminus.
Then would Savannah indeed tap the great
trade which centres at New Orleans. The
connecting link, to be built from Bain
bridge to Pollock, is only 162 miles in
length, and could be constructed in one
brief year. Few are aware of the immense
results Which have been by
the President and managers of the Gulf
Road £mce the closest the war. Two
hundred miles of new track have been
opened up, bridges built, much iron re •
laid, and depots erected, at a tremendous
outlay. It is this that prevents the com
pany from taking the extension in hand
themselves immediately.
Ihe entire tax derived from the tier of
counties permeated by this road, amounts
to but $12,000; and the actual amount ex
pended in its construction, from the com
mencement, aggregates seven and a half
millions. Who does not regret then that
this energy and vast expenses failed to be
returerative, simply because of the pres
ent hail in the march to the Msslsa ipi
As before remarked, the State has a
large interest in the work, and to make
the investment profitable, it may be neces
sary not only to aid its westward extension,
but to grant an annual bonus to some re
liable line of European ocean steamers,
which will establish a direct and perma<-
nent trade with the great marts of the old
world*
Never can the South really become inde
pendent—her cities attaio to their normal
importance and population; her individua
enterprises succeed; and her latent power
aud resonrees be fully developed, until we
cease to be tributary to our Northern bre
thren for nearly every article manufactured
at home, or procured beyond the seas.
Tbe wharve3 of this port at present are
crowded almost two tier deep with ship
ping bearing the flag of every civilmed na

attendance of young ladies. Thanks to
the able managers, Messrs, Roseufield and

fine one, not only were the fair of Bain*,

as well as Valdosta, was represented. The
ball was kept moving until the 'wee sraa'
hours.' The young folks went there with
the determiuatiou to enjoy tbe occasion aud
they did it.
