I resume to-day my o’d'g iff S o *** V®
and enter up n the arduous task of jour
nalism. It shall be my aim to uphold
Truth and deprec *te Falsehood ;to unveil
corruption, and expose villainy, wherever
they may exist. Using whatever ability I
pose s* to pijomote the proepe itff of Our
noble State to her former po ition in the
eye* of ihe world. Fhall ever be ready to
commend all who aid us in this great work,
without regard to their politics, religion or
nativity; and, to lash with unsparing hand,
those who show themselves opposed to her
interests, and her people**.
In conjunction with our. associate, will
use our utmost efforts, reader, to furnish

perusal. Should we fail, we shall then
console out selves with the reflection that
we have done our best —Angels could do

That is a bad showing.
A friend who qnotes the authority of cau

If the treaty is a failure, it is the fault of
the American Government.

Appointments.—- The telegraph announces
the confirmation of Mr* Atkins as Collector
of this port. And the nomination of Henry
P. Farrow,
District Attorney of the Southern District
of this State. We had hoped that the State
bad about rid itself of all this latter tribe of
politicians, bat if eeetts ire were mistaken
—Republican.
The Washington correspondent of the
Atlanta Constitution calls attention to the
fact that the Senate bill. that was passed
through the House last week upon motion
of Gen. Young, and which relieved the dis
abilities of over 3.000 persons in Georgia,
and other Southern States, meat again pass
the first named body before becoming a law
as it Wis originally passed by that*
body during the last Congress.
The Legislative Committees. —These com
mitties are working well, laboriously, effec
tively. In time their work will be known:
It can be readly understood that it wonld
not be proper to make all thiiractings pub-,
lie. When their labors aredone, the people
will open th«'ir eyes at the revolutions and
will bestow the plaudit of "well done"* upon
their faithful servant.
Election s. —The New Hampshue election
comes off on the 16th, and gives promise of
being a closely contested affair. The cam
paign is more animated than it has been
for years. The State being filled with spea
kers of both parties. The Republicans and
Democrats are each sang nine of success*
The Connecticut ( lection follows two weeks
later. The result will be looked for with
the keenest interest. The elections being
the firft of the j'car, and the parties being
fclosely divided in these States.

THE ALABAMA TREATY IMBROGLIO.
The controversy between the United
Ftates and Fnglaad, *ay a the Favinnah
iiepublican, oVfer the present status of the
Alabama claims question, has to us very
much the appearance of a “tempest in a
tea pot” Sflnmered down to Us real es
sence, there cannot be made to appear any
real cause for arresting the proceedings
already con menced under the treaty of
Washington.
It is true, the American administration
has acted in bad faith, and disgraced itself
by presenting a claim not only not embra
ced in the actual nego i *tions between the
two governments, but, in point of fact, one
which H did not expect to substantiate*
Th'S, is more a matter at concern
with the ame lean people than with the
British government. It Is discreditable to
u«, bnt effect the result with the
arbitrators
For a proper understanding of tiie ques
tion— one whidh really appears to have
puzsled the brains and ruffled the tempers
of modern statesmen—it should be kept
steadily in view that the two governments
have entered into a solemn compact and
treaty—that it folly provides for the ques
tions to be submitted, and'the principle of
law upon which an award is to be made—
and that this treaty has been maturely
considered and solemnly ratified by them,
respectively. It should also be remem
bered that all proceedings in the premises
of whatever nature, by either of the con
tracting parties, are to be oonaid«re& and
adjudged by this treaty. If an impropey
claim is inserted, or defense made incon
sistent vAth its terms, all that is to be
done is for the. arbitrators to set aside and
proceed with* the case according to the
st pulations of tirn treaty. If ,hat com
pact warrants such claim or defease, in
the opinion,nf the arbitrators, nether par
ty has a right to object, and vice versa.
Each government is put upon its honor,'
neither to do her claim anything that is
wrong or not contemplated by the treaty
and should es her violate this implied pledge
i» only forfeit, its own characlor and dig
nity; it in no way changes the real aspeo
of the case, or influences unjustly the dec!
sion to be rendered. In oih»*r words, the
arbi ra ors are the jmlges of everything
and wi h ihem every th ng should be left
wi h confidence in a just derision. We
therefore, th nk that England, whi’e she
has a right to complain of our unrighteous
claim has no just cause for interrupting
the regular process of the case in the hands
to Which it has been committed.
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS.
At the last session of the Leg'slatiire,
they passed an act creating for this county
a Board of Commissioners, consisting of
five persons, the Ordinavy, S. H. Dickin
son, S. S- Mann, F. L. Babbit and D. B.
Curry. The bill provides that they shall
be' elected at the same time the Ordinary's
election takes place, and their term of
office is the same as his.
This Board is required to meet the first
Monday in eaeh month, and upon it is con
ferred jurisdiction over all our county af
fairs. Three members constitute a quo*
rum, and their pay is fixed at two dollars
per day, while transacting business. The
bill also provides a clerk, who receives the
same compensation as the Superior Court
Clerk for similar services.

District Court, has decided that the law of
our State, forbidding the sale of merchan
