COMMUNICATIONS on subjects of public
interest, solicited from all parts of the country.
A Wrangle.
The two Cuthbert papers have had quite
a wrangle of late. Haw tell accuses the pro
prietors of the Democrat of being Swayzeites,
or in other words, of having their paper
printed by that worthy in Macon. The
Democrat partially denies this charge. Os
course we are not prepared to say whether
it is true or not, but if it is, we join with
the Appeal in denouncing any modus ope
randi by which the Southern people should
place money in the coffers of a notorious
interloper, and thus furnish him the means
with which to gr ind out slander against the
people by w hom he is being enriched. We
like the proprietors of the Democrat and
’consider them clever gentlemen, and men
of true Southern principles, but gentlemen
for the sake of Southern honor, have no
connection with such a man as Swayze.
Monument to an Incendiary.
It is reported says the Winchester Times :
“That the admirers of the famous John
Brown are quietly taking steps for the erec
tion of a monument to his memory, if a
•suitable site can be secured at Harper’s
Ferry or Charlestown.”
We can hardly believe the fact, that
there are men or women, who would con
tribute to such an unholy enterprise. If
there be, then we must conclude that our
race are capable of descending lower into
depths of shame, disgrace and degradation
than one could ever conceive of. A monu
ment to perpetuate the man felon is some
tlimg, the mere mention of which causes the
to rim cold in our veins. And the
people who would attempt such villainous
work should be whipped naked through the
.land, with a lash of scorpions.
fin porta ut.
The Wax* Department has just published
op-nirm-rd the Supremo Court of the
United States, for the information of State
courts to issue a writ of habeas corpus for
the discharge of a person held under the
authority, or claim, or color the authority
of the United States, by an officer of the
-government, when that fact appears upon
application for the writ, or to continue pro
ceedings under the writ when issued, after
the information in this respect has been
given in the return of the writ by the officer
having the custody of the prisoner.
The Florida Muddle.
The contest which lias for some time been
irking oil between Iteed and Day, the two
disput.mfcs for gubernatorial honors in Flor
ida is just about w here it started. The Su
preme Court decided that the Senate alone
had the right to say whether o\* not Harri
son Heed is Governor, one justice, however,
from the opinion of the court.—
The Senate adjourned without taking ac
tion in the matter, and the muddle is about
os'badly stirred as over.
Tl»e Best Market.
A correspondent of the Atlanta Constitu
tion speaks thus of Albany as a cotton mar
ket :
Aside from this, Albany was the best in
land cotton market of the State last season.
We speak by the record
With all due deference to the opinion of
the said correspondent, and, according to
him the knowledge of how to read “ the
record,” we must at the same time ask our
friend Frank to shove out his best quota
tions before we give in to his city in that
particular.
Bullock's Whereabouts.
The Atlanta correspondent of the Savan
nah Xeics, States that Bullock is in Canada,
near the line of which he has been hiding
for some time. He writes letters to people
in Atlanta, and sends * them first to his
friends in New York city, where they are
dated and mailed as if written in that
place.
The Favorite.
The Boston Advertiser, speaking “by the
card,” as it were, states that it is informed
in quarters which must be considered au
thoritative. that the nomination of the Cin
cinnati- Convention is to fall on Charles F.
Adams ; that he is the favorite of the East,'
’’the favorate of the West,’ and ’the favo
rite of the South.*”
From Cincinnati.
The latest from Cincinnati reports the
Coijventuin in quite an undecided condi
tion, though it is thought that Judge Davis
will be nominated.

GRAND JURY PRESENTMENTS,
Fe«atnr Superior Court.
APRIL TEEM 1872.
Y> e, the Grand Jurors chosen and sworn
for the first week of the April Term 1872
beg leave to make the following Present
ments :
V> e have examined the Poor House
through Committee and find the house in
good condition, the farm under good state
of cultivation, the inmates as comfortable
as could be expected, being well provided
for. We do not deem it necessary to re
commend anything in regard to the abolish
ment or continuation of the Poor House
system as we think it best to await the ac
tion of the county Commissioners thereon.
We have tin rough a special committee, ex
amined the jail and Court House, and find
the new addition to the jail unsafe, and re
eoininend that the cells be ceiled with good
thick plank. The guttering is in bad order
and we recommend that it be. repaired.
Upon examining the Court House, we find'
that the guttering is out of repair, some of
it having fallen entirely down, we therefore
recommend its being repaired immediately.
The plastering in the Grand Jury roorq has
fallen off in several placefe a%d some of: the
blinds neod ( repouv Withtfy-
the Court-House is in a good condition,
For the comfort of the Petit Jurors, we
recommend that the benches occupied by
them be cushioned, the style, &c., to be left
discretionary to the county Board of Com
missioners.
We are informed that some of the roads
and bridges in the county are in a bad
condition, and recommend that the County
Commissioners in whom we have implicit
confidence have said roads put in repair as
soon as possible.
Wfi recommend that the County Com
missioners assess per centum upon the
Taxable property of the county sufficient to
liquidate the present indebtedness of the
county, and. defray the expense thereof for
the current year. In consideration of the
fact that there has been a Board of Com
missioners, appointed, whose duty it is to
examine the Books of the ordinary, Sheriff,
and County Treasurer, Tax assess or and
Collector, and the amount of urgent busi
ness before the body, we have thought pro
per to leave the examination of the books
•entirely with the County Commissioners,
and request them to make a report to the
Grand Jury at the adjourned Term of this
court. ■
The last Legislation passed an amend
mc nt tot,he Free School law making it obliga
tory upon this body to appoint a County
Board of Education and to fix the compen
sation of the same. We have therefore
minted upon said Board of Education
Messrs H. Dickinson. R. G. Chesnut. R.
E. Whigam, R. VV. Davis and S. S. Mann
Messrs Davis an-’ Mann for four years, and
Messrs, Chesnut, Vhigham andDickinso n
for two years, and recu mmend that their
compensation be $2,00 pci day each when
actually employed.
A recent act of Legislature of Georgia
creating a country court in certain counties
in said State left it discretionary with the
Grand Jurors, summoned for the Spriug •
Term 1872 of their respective counties to
determine whether or not such a court was
necessary and beneficial, and if so to re
same.
After an sucll
it our duty to recommend *- -
court be created in our county.
We have not had sufficient time to ex
amine all of the different Justipes of the:
Peace’s Books in the county, but those that
we have examined we find neatly and prop
erly kept.
We have examined the office and Books
of the Clerk of the Superior Court, and we
find the office neatly kept, the books are
unsurpassed for neatness, reflecting much
credit upon the efficient Clerk.
We recommend to tbe Hon. P. J. Stror
zier, Judge Presiding, that owing to the
fact of heavy fains so retarding, the planting
interests of the country and believing it to
be essential to the general welfare of the
same that he adjourn the court on the 27th
day of April until such time as he may
designate. We recommend that the Sum of
$2,00 per day be paid to each juror.
We recommend to the General Assembly
to pass a general bill embracing all pay for
regular and extra duties performed by the
officers of the coimty, &c relieving the Grand
Jury from the responsibility.
With kind wishes for the future prosper*
ity of his Hon. Judge P. J. Strozier, Solic
tor General Jno. C. Rutherford, and officers
of the Court, ve ask to be discharged.
We recommend that these presentments
be published in the Southern Sun and
Weekly Democrat
