Improvements.
We notice that two very neat and tasty resi
dences are being erected on Cemetery street, one
by Mr. Jot. A. Protfit, and the other by Mr.——-
When finished they will add considerably to? the
appearance of the street, which at present is very
sparsely settled.
We also observe that Mr. Janies P. V*h Horn
if having built, in’the southern portion of the
city, a very nice residence. Mr. Van Horn has a
beautiful location amid a splendid oak grove, and
we feel inclined to congratulate him on his taste
in selecting so propituous a spot for comfortable
living.
We believe that The work on the Episcopal
Church has for the present suspended, but will,
we learn, be resumed at an early day.
The work on the new bank building goes brave
ly on, and by the time the busy season commences
will be ready for use.
We see that Judge H. M. Beach, is having some
tasty and valuable improvements made on his fine
residence, in the eastern portion of the city.
Mr. Simon A. Weil is having his store remod
ded and fixed Up, to accofninodate a stock of
goods which will in future render it more popular
than *ver v
We learn that Mr. Emery Johnsdn will soon,
commence the erection of his new brick storehouse
on Broad street, and that the Mesgrs. Belchers are
.now preparing to commence rebuilding on their
burnt district.
The residence of Mr. L. B. Ehriich has been
renovated and fixed up, and that of Mr. L. M.
Griffin is now undergoing some neat and substan
tial repain.
Subscribing- for tlie Sum
The colored people of this coanty are subscrib
ing very’liberally for the Sun. That is right.
l*hey should keep posted on the current subjects
of the day, and, while we differ with a great ma
jority of them politically, still they have found out
that we are willing to treat them with that respect
which is justly their due, and accord to them all
the public justice to which they are entitled. Os.
course if there was a Republican paper published
in the county, we would not expect them to take
OU'-a but as there is not, and they should have some
paper, they can find no better source through
which to gain information than the Sun. Then,
too, we wish them to take it for another reason.
sdHife of them' may be converted to our
views, and if so, we consider that we have done
.a good for the c&uss for which we gr« battling.

Leaving otir beautiful city a few dsyß ago, hpdn
a fishing excursion with boon companions, we
landed at the Lucas Spring, just as Aurora waited
from her dreamy couch, and lit up with golden
hues,of the East. Sweet were the songs of birds,
and hum of bees that greeted us as we landed.—
Before us. lay in exquisite loveliness the clear deep
spring, whose blue waters slept in smiles. Through
it beautiful fish of various species glided, like swift
shootiug meteors-oyer the blue bend of Heaven.
Standing u}x)n its banks and casting a delicious
shade over its blue depths, were giant monarchs
of the forests’, which hate since Earth self
balanced to her centre swtlng. listened to the soft
murmurings of the Thronateska’s waters. Hark!
a splash—we look—a noble trout breaks the pro
found stillness of nature. He wants his breakfast.
We are after him. Forgotten are the beauties of
nature in our warfare upon the finny tribe. Success
attends us. and as thd God of day sinks to rest we
arrive at home.
Early Closing of the Stores*
All .the merchants of the city, with but a few
exceptions, have agreed to close their stores at
the hour 0f.6 o'clock every afternoon, in order to
allow their clerks and business men a short respite
from their confining duties. We see that the
young men are availing themselves of their leisure
time, by every evening engaging in the very fasci
nating game of base ball; We have some very
fine players here, particularly among the young
boys and youth, and we would like to see one or
two good clubs organized. We thiuk our citizens
would enjoy^witnessing the game every afternoon,
and we knowingly recommend a visit to the
grounds as a sure cure for depression of the spirits,
“ blues,” See. Try it.
One of our Plagues.
One of the ifiostf prominent plagues to which
our city is at present.subjected, is to be found in
the millions of little creepers, known as ants or
pismires. The whole city is literaHy covered
with them, and they are as venomous tfs you
please. We cannot account for how- the small
barefoot boys succeed in tolerating them, as the
little reptiles will sting and bite clear through, a
man’s sock.
The Democrat is responsible for the report that
one or two parties in the city had been employed
to exterminate the crawling varmints, but we can t
see any decrease iu them so far.
Please Listen.
We honestly assure our reader' and patrons
that the business of ‘‘ dunning ” is very distasteful
to us, and we never engage in it until impelled by
necessity, tod in order to obviate the unpleasiufc
task of yoking money personally, we write this for
the purpose of requesting these in arrears for sub
scription to settle thair “ little bill.” The printer
should ip paid. We work hard and faithfully to
serve you and as our paper is very low priced we
think our subscribers might show their apprecia
tion of out service* by paying os our just due*.

Closing 1 the Stores at Six O’clock.
We, the undesigned merchants of Bainbridge,
agree to close our stores at six o'clock, p. m.. daily,

Examiuatidb at the Bainbridg’e Acad
emy.
The examination and closing exercises of this
institution took place on Friday last. We did not
have the pleasure of attending, hut learn that the
pupils creditably acquitted themselves*. The
speeches of the little boys and compositions of the
girls were highly interesting. Mr. Allen has
brought his school to a high state of perfection,
and Bainbridge should feel very proud of bet prin
cipal institution of learning.
£ity Alftiirs,
Our City is extremely dull, both in the way of
business and otherwise. Some of the citizens kill
time by fishing, pic nicing, &c., while every even
ing we have a very lively gatoeof Base Ball. Ouf
beautiful young ladies promenade the streets
every afternoon, a sight of whom is quite revivify
ing to us young bachelors, and the eld ones too for
that matter. The ladies, especially she pretty ones,
are great institutions, and although ouf city is dull
and monotonous, so long as we arfe •blessed with
their bewitching smiles we shall not cease declar
ing that “there is life-in the old land yet.”
A Liberal Offer. •
There is a gentleman at present stopping in the
city who offers a forty saw cotton gin for all th*
fice dogs in town. Now here’s a chance for some
enterprising chap, who is of a Jim-Fish-turn-of
mind. tjome ope lias made the calculation and
ascertains that it-would take one hundred and
twenty salesmen, each one to sell an average of
200, pounds per day. three weeks, to dispose of the
sausage meat which the fieg dogs in Bainbridge
would make. '

Severe Wind'Storiti.
Off Mdnday last at about o'clock, a veiy se

of aft hour the wind blew a perfect gale, Slid in
some parts of the city did considerable damage.—
The house of Mr. J. .A. Froffit, in process of con-
Btraction and only about half finished, was blown
down. W* learn that the storm was pretty gen
eral all over , the country, but as to whethet or not
it, did much damage, other than immediately in
the city; we have not heard.
Death erf a Firemaii.
@n Wednesday iast occurred the death of Mr.
Joseph Smith. a young man of this city, and a mem
ber of Stonewall engine company. He had been
suffering far h mimber of'months with the dropsy,
and ere he died had become totally blind. He was
a poor but honest and upright man, as ’good and
true a fireman as ever handled brakes, ana he de
parts into the spirit land regretted by many friends.
He was buried on Thursday last by Stonewall
company, the band he loved-and served so well.
OIF on Business.
Dur gay and festive friend, Capt. D. A. Russell,
left cn yesterday far upper Georgia, on very par
ticular business, that business being to secure an
addition to hishouSehold of a wife. Another bach
elor of our city is gone:
“ One by one the royes fall,
Drop by drop the spring runs ’dry.” •
We wish the Capt. lota of pleasure on his trip,
and that he may have a safe arrival with his hap
py bride back fa. old Bainbridge.
The Shoo Fly Glee-Chib.
We can how state positively that the members
of this club Will give a burnt cork entertainment in
| this city one night next week. Our citizens will
be placed upon notice of what night the affair
takes place.
We are glad that the boys have concluded to
appear for it is terribly dull in the city, and we
think our citizens will at this particular time show
i their appreciation of their efforts to amuse by
giving thepi a fulT house.
Population Increasing.
' Since our last edition there have been some ad
ditions made to our population. Capt. B. B. Bow
er is the fond father of a bouncing boy, and Mr.
Julius Steininger has been made the parent of a
daughter, both born the same (Saturday) night,
last We wish the young people a healthy and
prosperous voyage to-the years of maturity.
The Baltimorean;
We have received the first number of the Balti
morean. a fine thirty-two column newspaper, but
recently started in Baltimore, Maryland, by Messrs.
Crutchfield & Haas. It is a splendid weekly, filled
with the choicest reading matter, and any one of
our friends who would like to receive a good pa
per, should send two dollars to the publishers and
secure the Bdltimorean at once.
Sewing Machines.
We would recommend everybody to call on Mr,.
B. F. Colbert and make an arrangement by which
he can introduce into his household one of the
celebrated Wheeler & Wilson sewing machines.—
Mr. • . is selling them on the lease plan, which
places them within teach of everybody. *
