"I hope the peanuts remind them of home and the The Alabama Peanut Produc ers Association (APPA) board of directors joins the Florida Peanut Producers Association and the Georgia Peanut Com mission to present a unified effort through the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation to develop a new peanut program. Alabama joins growers from Florida, Georgia and Texas in endorsing the marketing loan program concept that was presented recently to the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Specialty Crops. Subcommittee Chairman Terry Everett (R- Ala.) held the hearing as a precursor to the farm bill. "Growers looked at every option available. The need for being competitive with imports along with the political realities in Congress dictates that growers consider a new direction for our program," says Carl Sanders, president of APPA. "Any program must address these key issues plus provide adequate production management and provide a fair compensation that is quota related." Georgia products were collected from various busi nesses and commodity organi zations throughout the state for delivery during the troops halfway point. "The Georgia products helps the troops get over the next duration." says Major George Fisher, logistics officer for the 78th Troop Command. "It lets them know people are thinking about them at home." with the $500/ton and $0.14 quota related payment that has gained widespread support from growers across the nation. Both peanut shellers and manufactur ers have also endorsed the program. "This is the first time in history that peanut growers, shellers and manufacturers all support one program concept," says Armond Morris, chairman of the Georgia Peanut Commis sion. "Now that APPA is on board, the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation endorses one concept, the marketing loan." "The Southern Peanut Farmers Federation's unity in endorsing the marketing loan proposal will further strengthen this concept, as well as to allow the federa tion to speak on the issue with a unified voice," says Larry Ford, president of the Florida Peanut Producers Association.
