Page 6A - The Lee County Ledger, Thursday, August 2, 2001 From The Bible By Jerry Kingery Bible Teaches So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college;) and they communed with her. And she said unto them. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read: Because they have for saken me, and have burned in cense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched. But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of the LORD, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, As touch ing the words which thou hast heard; Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD. Be hold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again. And the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem. And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the cov enant which was found in the house of the LORD. And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this cov enant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant. from 2 Kings 22 and 23 For a free Scripture packet, please write From the Bible, BIBLE FOUNDATION, PO Box 908, Newberg, Oregon 97132. email: bf@bf.org Almost every organization has a motto, a short pithy statement by which the members strive to live. “Be Prepared,” the Scout motto, is one of the best known. There are also mottoes by which Christians should live. The Bible is filled with them. Take for example 1 Peter 2:17. “Honor all men; love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.” Here are guiding principles for all of us. “Honor all men.” Highly es teem all men, women, and chil dren. They bear God's image. Use common courtesy and show respect in all your dealings with all others. “Love the brotherhood.” The brotherhood is the church of Jesus Christ. It takes many forms. It exists throughout the world. This brotherhood is a fellowship What the By Frank Taylor Scripture Verse “I (will) rather glory in my in firmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ” 2 Corinthians 12:9 Question From Reader What does it mean when people in the Church talk of backsliding? Response- Backsliding is simply falling back into old bad habits and sins. Nugget of Truth The burden you are feeling is only the weight of the Potter’s hand forming you for His glory. Bible Lesson A new believer does not have to become a backslider. God has given us all things that pertain unto life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). If we sin, we lose the joy of our relationship with God, and it is our own fault. However, we should know the cause and cure of backsliding. This will help us to avoid being backsliders, and will teach us how to help others who may have this of believers bound together by the Holy Spirit. Believers and unbe lievers alike should love the church. Christ shed His precious blood for her. “Fear God.” The Bible says. “The fear of the Lord is the be ginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7). If we properly understand the world around us, ourselves, and our neighbors, we accept God for who He is. He is our Creator. We live with reverence for Him. “Honor the king.” We should honor those, whom God places in authority over us, even if we dis agree with them. God puts them in place. He “removes kings and establishes kings” (Daniel 2:21). Implement these sayings. It is usu ally a slow process rather than a sudden happening. Simple pleasures may crowd out our Bible study and prayer times. Bad company may draw us away Soaring temperatures were a little late in coming this year, but the traditionally hottest days of the summer are upon us. Al though they pose potentially se rious health risks, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) says those threats can be minimized. Georgians are well aware that summer temperatures commonly reach into the 90’s for days or weeks at a time. The blister ing temperatures are often ac companied by high humidity. It is the combination of tem perature and humidity that cre ates the heat index, which can result in a range of heat-re lated illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heatstroke or sunstroke. "We all enjoy the summer, but there are some serious risks that we have to be mindful of," said GEMA Director Gary W. McConnell. "Some common sense mesures can help prevent problems." The heat index refers to how hot it actually feels when the relative humidity is added to the actual air temperature. A temperature of 92 degrees with relative humidity at 60 percent, for example, can create a heat index of 105 degrees. Heat in dex values are based on shady conditions with a light breeze, however, so exposure to full sun- from interest in spiritual things. Secret sin may dull our sense of right and wrong. Bit by bit we give in to the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil. We fail to speak openly of Christ. Soon we donft seem to be at all different from unsaved people around us. We can see this pro cess working in the life of Samson (Judges 14-16); Elimelech (Ruth 1:1-5); and Pe ter (Luke 22:54-62). When a person truly has ac cepted Jesus Christ as their per sonal Savior and has fallen into shine on a hot, humid day can increase the heat index by as much as 15 degrees. As the heat index rises, so does the severity of possible heat- related illnesses. A heat index of 80-90 degrees can cause pos sible fatigue with prolonged ex posure to the weather. A heat in dex of 90-105 degrees can possi bly result in sunstroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion with prolonged exposure and/or physi cal exertion. Sunstroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely with prolonged exposure and/or physical exertion when the heat index is 105-130 degrees. A heat index in excess of 130 de grees makes heatstroke or sun stroke highly likely with contin ued exposure. According to medical experts, heat-related disorders are gener ally caused by a reduction in the body's ability to release heat by circulatory changes or sweating, or by a chemical imbalance caused by too much sweating. If the gain in heat exceeds the body's ability to remove it, or when the body cannot compen sate for fluids and chemicals lost through sweat, the body's in ner core temperature begins to rise. This sets the stage for po tentially serious medical prob lems. Stagnant atmospheric condi tions and poor air quality, such sin and backslides, they demon strates particular characteristics that we may recognize. Next week we will cover those certain things that are seen in a person that has wandered away from the Lord. Your Bible Questions may be forwarded to Frank Taylor, % Lee County Ledger, and R O. Young children, the elderly and people with chronic health prob lems such as cardiac, circulatory or respiratory disease are at par ticularly high risk. The use of some prescription medicines can also precipitate heat-related ill nesses. Prevention is the best way in which to deal with the heat and humidity of summer. Medical experts recommend wearing loose fitting, lightweight cloth ing; drinking plenty of nonalco holic, noncarbonated, caffeine- free beverages such as water or juice; avoiding strenuous outdoor activities and staying indoors during extreme heat; and eating fewer foods that increase meta bolic activity, such as proteins. In addition, children should never be left in parked cars. In an effort to more effec tively make the public aware of the threat of prolonged heat waves, the National Weather Ser vices has developed special alert protocols, which are imple mented when the heat index is expected to exceed 105 degrees for at least two consecutive days.
