Jobless Claims Continue To Rise, But At Slower Pace State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said that the number of Georgians who filed initial claims for unemployment insurance in August increased by 48 percent over the same period a year ago. He also pointed out that the increase is less than in recent months. “We continue to see a signifi cant increase in the number of initial claims for unemployment insurance when compared to the same month last year.” said Thurmond. “What is differ ent is the magnitude of that increase, a little more than half of what it was in July, when it stood at 89 percent.” In August, 45.233 Geor gians filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits, up from 30,583 in August of last year. Albany was the state's only metropolitan area that showed a decline in first time claims over the year, dropping by 1.7 percent from 419 to 412. The increases in the other metro areas in clude: Athens, up 39 or 15 percent from 253 to 292; At lanta, up 4,626 or 59 percent from 7,860 to 12,486; Au gusta. up 361 or 54 percent from 672 to 1,033; Colum bus. up 142 or 29 percent from 487 to 639; Macon, up 40 or five percent from 824 to 864 and Savannah, up 23 or four percent from 625 to 648. Despite the increase in lay offs, many employers throughout the state have available jobs listed with the state labor department. “I continue to encourage workers who've lost their jobs to turn adversity into op portunity by using the lull in the economy to retool their skills to make themselves more employable,” Thur mond continued, “and many are doing exactly that. Help for laid-off workers, or those who want to make a career change, is available through our state wide network of ca reer centers, as well as on our wed site.” The Georgia Department of Labor’s web site at www.dol. state.ga.us offers extensive information about ca reers, job openings and labor market data.
