Family Matters To Lee Countians: oo Atypical, Horrific Times Shared - 2001 oo Notable Quotes oo Unity for The Community Ideas: Block Parties oo Unity is a comin' Family is key! Atypical, Horrific Times Shared — 2 0 0 1 How are my fellow and fern Lee Countians this day? We have a lot of added information to deal with in light of the events be ginning on September 11, 2001, or as my twelve-year old son calls it the day of 911. President George Bush has just addressed the nation at 9:00 p.m. this evening. I’ve just arrived home from a class at Albany State University in time to experience this with my son and daughter. My ten- year old daughter is turning cart wheels in front of the T.V. A young neighbor knocks on the back door to ask if I have room in my refrigerator for a bouquet of flow ers he wants to surprise his girl friend with in the morning. My precious senior-citizen mother was about to leave, having finished her babysitting. But, she decides to join us for the President’s message. So, we all gather in the living room to hear what Mr. Bush will tell us. My youngest, the cart wheeler, simply is not interested in the message. She expresses that she does not want to hear about these issues anymore. I put her to bed, tucking her in with a kiss and a “goodnight” and return to listen. It was a good time to share the strong voice of Mr. Bush with my son, my mother, and my eighteen-year old neighbor. I know this young man is concerned about the prospect of being drafted and has considered computer edu cation at Albany Technical Col lege or Darton. I encourage him to pursue further education as we hear statements from the President which clearly indicate imminent military action on the part of the United States. I put my hand on his shoulder as I explain that going through with the college options he’s thought Families are strength and healing to an ailing nation and will be key to the future of America. about will be an asset to him should he get drafted. In contrast, my seventh grader is ready to join the military and fight terrorism nght now. I am very grateful and inspired by the company I am keeping in this moment in my lving room as we gather together to lis ten. My mother remembers aloud my fathers’ and her fathers’ service in past World Wars. All of us have realized by now that there is a violent enemy coming against freedom. We saw the horror with our eyes and un derstand that this enemy has sin gled out the United States for de struction. What do our children think? Even the youngest have their fears about safety because of these events. Let them play as a healthy outlet for their feelings and fears. Join in play with your young ones. Be close and personal with your time, even if it is sparse due to responsibilities. Share your eyes, smiles, and hugs daily with your kids and with your community! IF YOU SMELL NATURAL GAS YOU SHOULDN'T To help you detect a natural gas leak, we have added the smell of rotten eggs to make it easy for you to identify. yVhat you should do if you smell this odor: • Alert others and leave the area immediately. • Open doors and windows to ventilate the area. • Refrain from operating any electrical switches or equipment that might create a spark in the area - including telephones and flashlights. • Go to a phone away from the smell and call Atlanta Gas Light Company. Outside gas odors should be reported to us right away - do not try to locate the source yourself. Since deregulation of the natural gas industry in Georgia, the role of Atlanta Gas Light Company is to manage and repair its gas line infrastructure. That’s why you should call Atlanta Gas Light Company, and not your Marketer, to report a gas leak or gas emergency.
