Page 8A - The Lee County Ledger, Thursday, September 27,2001 School Superintendent Explains New Food Service Policy Special To The Ledger The following is a response to an article that appeared in Sunday’s Albany Herald By: W.S. Bill Lewis, Superintendent, Lee County Schools A recent newspaper "editorial" masquerading as news raised questions concerning Lee County Board of Education Policy EBB passed in the regu lar business meeting on August 13,2001. The intent of the policy is to curb abuses from a few in dividuals in the community and on staff. At the end of each fis cal year much time and effort is required on the part of food and nutrition services staff to collect past due accounts. Delinquent accounts through the year create cash flow problems for the food services program. This past year after much effort to collect past due accounts, some accounts Want To Quit Smoking? The American Lung Association Can Help There are three points to keep in mind when quitting smoking, according to the American Lung Association; it’s relatively easy to quit, it’s hard to stay off cigarettes for the first two or three months after quitting, and those who have quite for over three months have a good chance of remaining non- smokers. The American Lung Associa tion of Georgia is offering Free dom From Smoking, a 7-session group quit-smoking program led by trained volunteers who under stand why you smoke. The Free dom From Smoking (FFS) Clinic begins Tuesday, October 9, at Phoebe East in East Albany. The first session is a free orientation about quitting smoking and the FFS clinic. The cost of the complete pro gram is $60. Information and pro gram registration are available by calling 229-435-3626. For many smokers, especially those who have tried to quit be fore. group support can make the difference in helping to stay smoke-free. Freedom From Smoking uses a positive behav ior-change approach that teaches a person how to become a non- smoker for good. Throughout the program participants will get spe cial attention in developing their own quitting plan, dealing with recovery symptoms, controlling weight, managing stress, and fighting those urges to go back to smoking. “Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for them selves and those who care about you” said Pam Adams, Director of the American Lung Associa tion in Southwest Georgia. “Most people quit smoking many times before they quite for good - four to five times is the average" said Adams. Call the local American Lung Association for help in quitting smoking at 229-435-3626. Lee County Health Care News Johnson, From Page 4A the Unknown Soldier. People paid the ultimate sacri fice, dying for their country. I think we owe it to the heroes of our country to remember them and I am very glad we do. Some people thought that World War I was going to be the war to end all wars, but just a few years later we had World War II. In the early 1930’s Hitler gained control over Germany. This is what started World War II. Also, in World War II around 405,000 American Soldiers died fighting for our country. My grandfather was in the Navy during the Korean War. He is still alive today. He never really came close to being killed, even though he saw action during his time in the Navy. But I am sure that the memories will live with him for ever. My great uncle was also in volved in the Korean War. I’ve been told that my uncle lived in the jungles around 18 months fighting. Yet the really sad thing is that I never knew or met him because he never came back. He was either killed, never found, or is one of the unknown soldiers. I think that everyone should stop and be thankful for the people who fought for our free dom. especially on November 11th. I know that I am proud to be the granddaughter and great niece of two wonderful men who fought for our freedom. Again, I say, I thank veterans for my free dom. By J. The policy provides a warning time before any action is taken. Every effort is being put forth not to embarrass any child in this process. For those who cannot afford meals, a program is in place to provide free and reduced lunches. Parents, students, and staff can prepay meals if they choose; however never has there been any intent to provide a “charge service" for school meals. In the article the issue of char acter education is raised. I assure everyone that the school system does not want to throw away food. We do want our students to eat what is provided. It must be noted here that "paying your bills" is a character issue that we do well to teach. If someone beats the system, the rest have to pay. Students in Mrs. Irene Tabor’s class at Lee County Middle School had the opportunity have a “book signing” last week. Parents were invited to the class to have the students tell them about the books that they wrote and sign autographs.
