Tedder Receives First White Coat During Ceremony Mercer University School of Medicine gave first-year medi cal students their first lesson in compassion at its annual White Coat Ceremony in Macon. First- year medical student Mary E. Tedder was "cloaked" in her first white coat as part of the cer emony. She is the daughter of Drs. Terry and Mary Beth Tedder of Lee County. Although compassion has al ways played a significant role in patient care, it has traditionally not been a formal part of medi cal school curriculum. Through the White Coat Ceremony, Mer cer University School of Medi cine helps to clarify for incom ing students the true meaning of humanism in medicine - that as physicians they should strive to not only cure their patients but to care for them as well. "The White Coat Ceremony is the highlight of orientation for our first-year medical students." said Medical School Dean Ann C. Jobe. "It captures the stu dents' attention at a very impres sionable moment - the very be ginning of their medical stud ies." In addition to the white coats the 58 first-year students received during the ceremony, each received pins inscribed "humanism in medicine" from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and copies of the book On Doc toring from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Since opening in 1982, Mer cer University School of Medi cine has been instrumental in helping Georgia residents access quality health care, wherever they live, by educating students to become practicing physicians in Georgia. In addition to the doctor of medicine degree, the School of Medicine offers graduate degree programs in family services, family therapy and public health.
