John Sumner Chapter,
Colonial Dames Holds
Meeting
The September Meeting of the
John Sumner Chapter, Colonial
Dames 17th Century was held
at the home of Mrs. Robert
Hoffman, 1222 Lovers Lane
Road, Leesburg. President. Mrs.
Pasco Parker, called the meet
ing to order at 4 PM. Mrs.
Frances Bishop led the Pledge
of Allegiance. Mrs. Rufus
Johnson led the American’s
Creed.
Mrs. Jean Johnson gave the
Colonial Minute. She explained
how the Quakers did not use
Grave Stones and did not have
family plots for burials, that
Quakers were buried in rows,
side by side. This is one reason
why it is difficult to trace Quaker
ancestry.
Gifts for the Veterans were col
lected. Mrs. Tetro had made 11
lap robes for the Chapter to
present. Mrs. Parker read a note
from Mrs. Sammy Lott to the
members in which she also do
nated $20 to be sent to the Vet
erans. Mrs. Jean Johnson also
made a monetary donation.
Mrs. Sharon Hoffman, Chapter
Veterans Chairman, thanked the
members for their contributions.
Guest Speaker for this meet
ing was Mr. Carl Fowler. Mr.
Fowler gave an interesting and
entertaining talk of the use of
Gourds for decoration. He ex
plained to the members how he
became interested in using
gourds for more than the tradi
tional use as birdhouses. He told
how he grows them, dries them,
and use them to make a variety
of decorative pieces such as dip
pers, vases, bowls, and flower
arrangements. He demonstrated
some of the methods he uses and
explained how he obtains the
different effects from natural to
finished painted projects. At the
end of the talk, Mr. Fowler was
presented with a thank you gift
from the Chapter.
