GEMA's School Safety Project Kicks-
Off Contest for Georgia Students
School safety has a profound
impact on the learning environ
ment of Georgia students. To un
derscore the importance of school
safety from the students' perspec
tive, the Georgia Emergency Man-
agement Agency's (GEMA)
School Safety Project is sponsor
ing a slogan contest for Georgia
middle and high school students
giving them the opportunity to
define the topic in their own
words.
"Since GEMA's School Safety
Project is still so new to many
Georgia students, we felt like this
contest would give them a chance
to help us promote the importance
of our program," said GEMA Di
rector Gary W. McConnell. "Who
better can help define school safety
than those middle and high school
students who are dealing with the
reality of school safety each day."
This contest, which is an
nounced during the Georgia ob
servance of Safe Schools Week, is
open to students entering grades
six through twelve in the fall of
2001. Entrants must be Georgia
residents, must have permission
from a parent or legal guardian to
enter and must supply the name
and phone number of a parent or
legal guardian for verification.
The winner of the contest will re
ceive a $500 U.S. Savings Bond.
Eligible students may enter the
contest on line by visiting the
School Safety Project's Web site
at www.ganet.org/inthezone. Or,
students who would like to illus
trate their slogans, may mail then
to the following address: School
Safety Slogan Contest, P.O. Box
18055, Atlanta, Georgia 30316-
0055. Entries must be received by
November 30, 2001.
"We plan to use the winning
slogan to help promote and rein
force the message that most
school violence can be pre
vented," said Steve Harris, GEMA
State School Safety Project Man
ager. "For every act of school vio
lence that we see reported in the
news, a number of similar inci
dents have been prevented due to
the efforts of students who be
came involved and when school
officials and law enforcement of
ficers responded to the situation."
