Is Georgia Prepared To Protect
The Public From Bioterrorism?
"The same public health system
that protects us every day from
outbreaks of dangerous infectious
diseases is also our first defense
against bioterrorism," says
Kathleen E. Toomey, M.D..
M.P.H., director of the Georgia
Department of Human Resources
(DHR ) Division of Public Health.
Public Health's staffing, planning,
training, and improvement of
communications systems to ad

Since September 11. the Divi
sion of Public Health has asked
all medical care providers
throughout Georgia to be on alert
for unusual cases or clusters of
diseases that might signal a
bioterrorist attack. Because of this
and increased public awareness of
terrorist threats; morecases of

"I don't recommend that indi
viduals stockpile antibiotics such
as ciprofloxacin (for anthrax) or
that you take antibiotics if you
have not been exposed to the dis
ease," says Toomey. "This can
cause disease-resistant strains of
other bacteria to develop in your
body, can cause side effects, and
can harm our ability to direct
resoumes to an actual outbreak."
The United States has enough
antibiotics to prevent the disease
in two million persons exposed
to anthrax, so preventive medi
cine can be transmitted rapidly to
anyone who may be affected by
the disease. Vaccination is not
recommended, and the vaccine is
not available to the general pub
lic. Anthrax is not contagious.
Individuals who are concerned
that they may have been exposed
to an unusual disease should con
tact their physician and their pub
lic health district office or county
health department. A Georgia
Division of Public Health Event

Georgia Poison Control Center
