Clay was named Man of the Year by the Lee County Chamber of Commerce. Billy Mathis, Chairman of the Lee County Board of Commission, presented Dr. Clay with Man of the Year Award. Roy Goodson was presented the Partner in Agriculture Award at the Lee County Chamber of Commerce Banquet. Doug Collins, Lee County Extension Service Interim Director, presented Mr. Goodson with the Partner in Agriculture Award. Michael Thurmond (left) is pictured witht Lee County Chamber of Commerce President (right). Mr. Thurmond was the keynote speaker at the banquet. Wendy Martin was presented the Partner in Education Award at the Lee County Chamber of Commerce Banquet. Chamber Holds Annual Banquet The Lee County Chamber of Commerce held their annual banquet October 25 at Creekside Educational Center at Chehaw Park. Michael Thurmond, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Labor, was the guest speaker. Commissioner Thurmond, in highlighting the economic effect of the September 11 terrorist attack, indicated that no one knows the ultimate impact of that event on the economy. Unem ployment rates are up 77 percent in Georgia. The Commis sioner of Labor stressed that providing jobs is the key to reducing crimes. He said “Education can make a difference.” He noted that the crime rate for young black males with jobs is the same as that for young white men with jobs. The chamber recognized the Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Partner in Agriculture, Partner in Education and Chairman’s Business Spotlight. Dr. Robert A. Clay was named Man of the Year. Dr. Clay retired January 1, 1997 as superintendent of Lee County School System. He served 32 years as the local school superintendent. He was the last elected school superintendent. He was elected eight times without opposition. Before serving as superintendent, he was on the board of education for eight years. Patricia Manning was named Woman of the Year by the Lee County Chamber of Com merce. Mrs. Manning retired as a certified court reporter for the Pataula Judicial after 31 years. She served on the Lee County Planning Commission for 26 years was the chair woman for over six years. Wendy Martin was named Partner in Education. Mrs. Martin, a former high school teacher, served on the Lee County Board of Education for 12 years and served as board chairwoman. Mrs. Martin is active on the state and national level in the education movement. Roy Goodson was named the Partner in Agriculture. Mr. Goodson retired as Director of the Lee County Extension Office. He served 25 years in Lee County and five years in Dougherty County. He is a member of the Georgia Pecan Growers’ Association Board of Directors. Eddy Meeks, President of the Lee County Chamber of Commerce, presented Buffalo Rock with the Business Spotlight Award. He noted that Buffalo Rock provides support to almost every aspect of the Lee County School System. Buffalo Rock is the area distributor of Pepsi products. Sheriff’s Office Files Weekly Report Lee County High School Homecoming Parade Thursday November 1 Senior Night & Game November 2 Sheriff Harold Breeden reports that officers with the Lee County Sheriffs Office worked cases dur ing the past week including cases for forgery, criminal trespass, ha rassing phone calls, possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession/consumption of alcohol by a minor and obstruction of an officer, disorderly conduct, simple battery theft by shoplifting, posses sion of marijuana less than an ounce, possession of alcohol by an under age person, failure to appear and driving while license suspended. Montez Dawayne Stephens, 22, of 708 Mitchell Street, Albany, was charged with forgery - first degree on October 22. Stephens was ar rested on the forgery charge after checks were passed at a Lee County Bank. Willis Bowles, 18, of 210 Sandy Beach Road, Leesburg, was charged with criminal trespass on October 22. Bowles was arrested on the criminal trespass charge after being warned by the property owner not to come on said property. Timothy Charles Fletcher, 40, of 150A W. Bailey Street, Leslie, was charged with harassing phone calls on October 23. Fletcher was arrested after warrant was taken out by the victim. Phillip Ansar Husain, 18, of 104 Willard Court, Leesburg, was charged with possession of a sched ule II controlled substance, posses sion/consumption of alcohol by a minor and obstruction of an officer on October 25. Husain was charged on the above charges after running from uniform officers after respond ing to an alarm. Erik Lecal Burris, 21, of 479 Murphy Road, Leesburg, was charged with disorderly conduct on October 25. Burris was arrested af ter getting into a fight over a nintendo game. Warren Terrol James, Jr., of 479 Murphy Road, Leesburg, was charged with disorderly conduct on October 25. James was arrested af ter getting into a fight over a nintendo game. Richard L. Pridmore, Jr., 17, of 795 US 82 West, Leesburg, was charged with simple battery on Oc tober 25. Pridmore was charged af ter getting into a fight with a family member over a pizza being deliv ered.
