Sheffield turned him- Smithville Rolls Back Taxes Tells Owner To Clean Up Property During a called meeting Octo ber 29, Mayor Jack Smith and the Smithville City Council approved a tentative millage rate which re flects a slight decrease in prop erty taxes. The council approved a proposed millage rate of 8.985 mills which is a reduction of .097 mills. The council will meet Novem ber 8 and conduct a public hear ing on the millage rate before adopting the millage rate. The council approved a motion to send Mamie Ladd - Mamie Lewis Woodbridge notification that the property located at 118 Henry Street must be cleaned. The condition of the property vio lates the city’s nuisance ordi nance. If the property owner fails to take action to bring the property up to a standard that does not vio late the city’s ordinance, the city will contract to have the property cleaned and attach a lien on the property. The Smithville City Council has used this procedure before and each time, the property owner has taken corrective action to im prove the appearance of the prop erty. SIZEMORE LAW OFFICES W. James Clifton Coleman, Jr., 50, of 416 W. Tift Avenue, Albany, was charged with shoplifting and posses sion of marijuana less than an ounce on October 26. Coleman was charged on the above charges after being caught shoplifting at a Lee County business. During a search on Coleman, the officer found mari juana on him. Chad Ryan Fritts, 20, of 119 Mathis Lane, Leesburg, was charged on October 27 with posses sion of marijuana less than one ounce, possession of alcohol by an underage person and wanted out of Dougherty County for theft by shop lifting. Fritts was charged with said charges after officers went to the residence to serve Fritts a warrant. Officers asked consent to search his residence (as part of his probation ordered by the judge) and discov ered the marijuana and alcohol in the residence. Elizabeth Grace Gillin, 18, of 119 Mathis Lane, Leesburg, was charged October 27 with possession of marijuana less than one ounce and possession of alcohol by an un derage person. Gillin was charged after being at the residence that the officers searched with the above offender. Robin Leigh Curry, 18, of 848 US 19 S, Lot 43, Leesburg, was charged October 27 with failure to appear and driving while license sus pended. Curry was charged with said charges after officers initiated a traffic stop on her for defective equipment. Labor Department Career Center In Albany Wins State Award State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said that the Georgia Department of Labor's Albany Career Center won a statewide Star of Excellence Award at the annual State Em ployer Committee Conference held recently at Lake Lanier. Commissioner Thurmond pre sented the award to career center manager Mike Flowers of Lees burg, along with employment marketing representatives Panzer Hall of Albany and Lynne Jones of Lee County. The Albany Career Center was selected as the best among the eight district Rising Above the Rest Award winners, which fea tured project competition among career centers throughout the state. Among the projects the Albany Career Center was involved with during the year was a PowerPoint presentation for businesses, along with an intern program for col lege students. The network can be accessed at the career cen ter or via the Internet at www.dol.state.ga.us Mayor Encourages Citizens To Receive The Influenza Vaccine MayorR.S. “Bob” Boney is en couraging citizens of Lee County to receive the influenza vaccine. Annually, more than 20,000 Americans die each year due to influenza related illness and the number of fatalities increases to 40.000 during severe influenza seasons. In 1999, influenza and pneumonia were the seventh leading cause of death in Geor gia. Influenza is a highly contagious viral infection of the nose, throat, and lungs that is one of the most severe illnesses of the winter sea son. Influenza is spread easily from person to person usually when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Influenza is very eas ily prevented. A highly effective and cost effective vaccines has been developed and is available through many physician offices, health departments and local community pharmacies. The vac cine is highly recommended for certain "at-risk" populations such as Georgians 50 years old and older; persons with other under lying health problems such as dia betes. kidney problems, blood disorders, immune system disor ders, or chronic heart or lung dis orders; women who will be in their second or third trimester of pregnancy during influenza sea son; residents of nursing homes or other long term care settings; and health care workers. The annual direct medical costs (hospitalizations, physician office visits, medications, etc. ) of in fluenza are estimated at up to $4.6 billion with the total direct and indirect costs (work and school days missed) of a severe influ enza epidemic are at least $12 billion. Each year, the average number of hospitalizations attrib uted to the influenza virus is 140,000. The number of hospital izations climbs to more than 300.000 during a severe influenza breakout. The influenza vaccine can prevent up to 50 to 60 per cent of hospitalizations and 80 percent of deaths associated with influenza-related complication among the elderly.
