Page 6A - The Lee County Ledger, Thursday, November 8,2001 The “Word” For The Week By Dr. Dennis Prutow True Thanksgiving Food When we celebrate Thanks giving, we indulge ourselves. The food is sumptuous. The des serts are scrumptious. Our sides ache. We loosen our belts and look for a place to rest, from eating. “That’s real food,” we say. It may be real food, but is it true food? What’s the differ ence? Look at what Jesus Christ tells us. “My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink” (John 6:55). How can this be? Thanksgiving dinner is real food all right but it can also be false food. That is, if we put all our eggs in the material food basket, we will come up short in the end. What is the true bread? "This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever” (John 6:58). Real food, that turkey dinner for example, points to the true food from heaven, Jesus Christ. We partake of His flesh and blood when we trust in His sac rifice as the only adequate pay ment for our sins. We then have real life. We may die physically. We will never die eternally. The pilgrim fathers and mothers gave thanks to God for the provision of real food in the new world. They also gave thanks to God for Jesus Christ, the true food He gave them. Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psal tery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth. He loveth righteousness and judg ment: the earth is full of the good ness of the LORD. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none ef fect. The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom By Jerry Kingery he hath chosen for his own inher itance. The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men. From the place of his habi tation he looketh upon all the in habitants of the earth. He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works. There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Let thy mercy, 0 LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee. Christ expects us to act as reasonable men, and sit down and count the cost before starting any very se rious undertaking. “For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?” (Luke 14:28) The “tower” re ferred to stands for beauty, safety, and prospect, and is applicable to all “character builders” like what we see in Luke 14:27. We can not count the cost until we have first the vision of some great pos sibility before us. No wise man desires his life to end like the tower of Babel, in shame and confusion. To live the Christian life is indeed a great and solemn undertaking. Many begin this tower and seem not to finish, bringing themselves into ridicule, and the tower into a laughing stock. Count the cost. It is costly to be a Christian. It costs some more than others. Natural temperament, early train ing and environment may influ ence greatly. Whatever the price, it must be paid. Counting addi tional cost include: 1. GIVING UP ALL SIN. Christ gave Himself for us that He might “redeem us from all iniquity” (Titus 2:14). Sin is the worst of all investments. Every scheme in which it has a place is rotten. The wicked must forsake his ways. 2. SURRENDING THE WILL. “What wilt Thou have me to do?” must be the attitude of the soul. We must count what it will cost the self life to put Christ first in everything, and to seek first His Kingdom. 2. SEPARATION FROM THE WORLD. We are to go after Him bearing His cross (Luke 14:27). By His cross the world is to be crucified unto us, and we to the world (Gal. 6:14). When we find our all in Christ it is easy to give up all for Him. If any man love the world, the love of the father is not in him. 4. OP- POSI TION BY THE WORLD. The world that hated Him will hate you also. Noah by his work of faith con demned the world (Heb. 11:7), and no doubt the world con demned him. Abel had to suffer because his works were righ teous. In the world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. 5. TEMPTATION BY THE DEVIL. The ungodly are not tempted as the Christians are. Through the lust of the eye and the pride of life offers he still offers his subtle illusions. But Christ is able to deliver and succour the tempted. 6. SELF-DENIAL. “If any man would come after Me, let him deny himself.” The Chris tian life is a life of faith in the Son of God, and so must be a life of self-denial. “Not I, But Christ.” Christ counted the cost when He came forth to live the life of the Father among sinful men. “As the Father sent Me, so have I sent you.” Seniors Work On Doll House The seniors at the R S Boney Senior Center are moving right along with The Barrett House.
