The Lee County Board of Com missioners gave their approval to the proposed special purpose spe cial option sales tax. Voters will decide in March if they will ap prove the continuation of collect ing sales tax at the current rate. It is anticipated that the current SPLOST III funds will be col lected by September 2002. Since the maximum collection of SPLOST funds is projected to occur 19 months prior to the March 31,2004 collection period deadline, a referendum will be scheduled Tuesday, March 19, 2002. At this time, voters will continue the SPLOST for another five years. Based on the preceding SPLOST - III collection trend, as suming aggressive business growth, Lee County can expect to receive about $300,000 per month or 18 million dollars over the maximum five year period in SPLOST - IV revenue beginning in October 2002. In addition, the Georgia Department of Transpor tation usually matches every county SPLOST dollar spent on road projects with $0.75 of state funds thereby greatly extending the county's SPLOST funds. If the voters approve the SPLOST IV referendum, it will become effective October 1, 2002.
