A New Puppy For Christmas? Cannien Cottage In my last article, I talked a little about what to consider when thinking about getting a new puppy or dog for Christmas. Here are a few more ideas to consider that I hope you will find helpful. Think about getting an older dog rather than a puppy. A puppy is, by far, more cute and you will have more control over its learn ing but you have to consider the puddles on the floor, the chewed shoes and furniture and the time it takes to properly train him/her. If the dog is a pure bred, then you will have a good idea of the adult size. If you get a “mixed bred” you may end up with a size you had not wanted. Most Vets say that the size of the feet is a good indication of the adult size- a puppy with huge feet may turn out to be a huge dog but again that’s not certain. A puppy needs more supervised playtime and more patience on the part of the owner for teaching acceptable behaviors. An older dog, over nine months, keeps himself entertained better, the size of the dog is more obvi ous and the characteristics of the dog can be seen. This allows you to determine grooming needs, etc. An adult dog may have developed some behavior problems but you “can teach an old dog new tricks”. The teaching sessions needs not be as frequent with an older puppy or dog. Now where do you find your perfect dog? One obvious place is a pet store. You need to be care ful about this since many puppies come from “Puppy Mills”, where people bred dogs to sell the pup pies. The quality of the puppies can be questionable and Pet Store puppies tend to be expensive. Ads in the newspaper are a second option; this usually allows you to see one of the dog’s parents. But be careful, some people will tell you most anything to make a sale! Rescue Leagues are organizations that usually only have one breed of dog and the people who run these places are very knowledge able about a particle breed of dog. The Humane Society should have a list of Leagues in your area. The Humane Society or Animal Shel ter also has puppies and dogs. This is my recommendation. Many times, the staff will know something about a particular dog and can also help with recom mendations about a dog’s tem- around the dog. Most important, with any dog you get, make ar rangements to have the puppy or dog check by a Vet before a sale is completed Well, I’ve run out of space so next article, I’ll talk about what breeds of dogs are good with chil dren.
