Sportsmen And Women Encouraged To Observe Good Hunter Ethics Hunters have a responsibility to ensure that the non-hunting pub lic does not become the anti-hunt ing public. Fortunately, this eas ily can be accomplished by dem onstrating good hunter ethics when participating in outdoor ac tivities, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Re sources, Wildlife Resources Di vision (WRD). Hunter ethics in clude maintaining a level of re spect for the outdoors environ ment, the non-hunting public, other hunters, private landown ers, safety, conservation and natu ral resources. "All too often, hunting is por trayed in a negative way to the general public and public opinion can effect legislation about hunt ing," says WRD Director David Waller. "Therefore, it is the ob ligation of all hunters to observe good ethics to maintain both a positive image and a healthy fu ture for the sport." WRD suggests that hunters fol low these guidelines: Care for all harvested game properly. Hunters should avoid displaying game in potentially offensive ways, such as tied to the hood of a car or in the back of a truck with the tailgate down. Dispose of all carcass material properly. Do not under any cir cumstances dump deer carcasses by roadsides, in creek beds or other improper locations. This is disrespectful to the animal and to the non-hunting public as well as illegal. Know and follow all of the hunting regulations and game limits. Demonstrate respect for public and private property landowners. Always ask permission to hunt on private land. Respect natural resources. Drive only on developed roads. Do not alter the natural landscape in any way. Keep hunting areas clean. Pick up spent shells and any other litter. Remember safety guidelines. Test all equipment to be used dur ing your hunt (tree stand, guns, etc.) to make sure they are oper ating correctly and that knowl edge of the equipment to be used is sufficient to maintain safety for both yourself and other hunters. Show restraint. Shoot only when absolutely sure of the tar get and what is behind it. Make every attempt to retrieve game and avoid wounding animals. Promote conservation. By turn ing in poachers, hunters protect the longevity of the sport and also aid in the protection of non-game and/or endangered wildlife ani mals. For more information on ethi cal hunting, contact the local WRD Game Management Office or call (770) 918-6416.
