Intelligence and Diplomacy from October 23 through 28, 2001 in Washington, D.C. Having demonstrated aca demic achievement and an inter est in a career related to national security. Perez and Etheridge joined 350 outstanding high school juniors and seniors from across America at the conference. Students learned first-hand about national security, diplomacy and global defense systems. “This group of young hopefuls was in our nation’s capital dur ing a critical time when global leaders were banding together to oppose terrorism,” said Donna Weldin, executive director of the National Youth Leadership Fo rum. “While the leaders of coun tries around the world are learn ing from and addressing the Sep tember 11,2001 incidents, so too were students like Erik Etheridge Jaime Perez. Experiencing the pace, decision making and ur gency of Washington, D.C, through interaction with some of our country’s most qualified na tional security leaders will help shape these students! future plans.” Captain Jeffrey K. At one point, I was little more than an athlete, but soon I realized edu cation was vitally important to my success. You need to recog nize that you can do anything you set your mind to. Get educated and break out of the habit of thinking you can’t do anything.” He concluded, “Given the series of events leading us from Sep tember 11 into the future, our country depends on you.” Throughout the forum, Etheridge and Perez experienced how the U.S. plans for peace, pre pares for crisis and met with lead ers from key agencies and insti tutions. Students had the oppor tunity to visit several military in stallations and agencies, such as the U.S. Department of State; the Marine Corps Combat Develop ment Command at Quantico; the U.S. Naval Academy; the War Gaming and Simulation Center; the Foreign Service Institute; and Erik Etheridge the National Infrastructure Pro tection Center, among many oth ers. The National Youth Leadership Forum culminated with a student- run simulation of international crises involving the Caucasus re gion in Central Asia, where stu dents assumed true-to-life roles in making decisions to resolve a fic tional global situation. Erik Etheridge and Jaime Perez Jaime Perez are current staff members of the Lee County High School Naval Junior ROTC program and will run a national security decision making simulation for the senior naval science students in the com ing weeks. The expertise that they gained in Washington, D.C. will help to bring some of the quality education and experience of the National Youth Leadership Fo rum to the local area. National Exchange Club Youths Of The Month By Edwina Gleaton Students selected to represent Lee County High School as the National Exchange Club Youths of the Month for November are: Brittany Bagnato, Hayley Carlton, and Meejin Hahn. Three students who are the highest ranked in the senior class will be selected each month from Sep tember - March. In the spring, an Exchange Club committee will review student applications, and students will be chosen to enter the Youth of the Year national competition. Brittany is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Bagnato. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John Bagnato and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Stone. She is active in Beta Club, National Honor Society. Future Business Leaders of America, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Brittany serves on the Regions Bank Jun ior Board of Directors and vol- VarsHy Cheerleader Exchange Club Youth of the Month are Meejin Hahn and Brittany Bagnato. Not pictured is Hayley Carlton. She is a LCHS varsity cheerleader and is active in the All-Star Competition Cheerleading-Community Orga nization. Brittany is an excellent student whose awards include being selected for Governors Honors, Georgia Merit Scholars, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, United States Achievement Academy in math, National Honor Roll, and National Leadership and Service Awards. She considers her most outstanding achievement to be receiving the Georgia Certificate of Merit awarded to students in the top 5% of their class. Brittany plans to attend the University of Georgia where she is thinking of majoring in medicine. Her career goal is to become a dermatologist. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randy Carlton of Leesburg, Hayley is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Alderman and Mr. and Mrs. Straud Carlton. Hayley is a College Prep student enrolled in the LCHS Apprentice ship Program; thus, she will also receive the Technical/Career seal when she graduates. Hayley is active in the Future Business Leaders of America and the Fel lowship of Christian Athletes. She has played tennis for 3 years as a member of the LCHS Tennis Team. She plans to attend Valdosta State University and hopes to go into the medical field, becoming a pediatric nurse. Meejin is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hahn of Lees burg. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Seung Hahn and Mr. and Mrs. Kwang Yun. She is a member of the Beta Club, Na tional Honor Society. LCHS Math Team, and Drama Club. She volunteers at the Albany Humane Society, and tutors other students in math. She has also volunteered to help first graders with home work. helped run a bike rodeo, and picked up garbage for the community. Meejin enjoys play ing the piano and tennis and con siders being selected to partici pate in the Governor’s Honors Program as her most outstanding achievement. Other special achievements and awards include Math Competition Awards, Alge bra 2 Highest Average Award, U.S. History Highest Average Award, 11th Grade Perfect Atten dance Award, and having all A’s for all high school courses thus far. Meejin plans to continue her education at Georgia Tech where she is interested in studying phar macy. The Northwest Exchange Club of Albany sponsors the Youth of the Month local competition. To be eligible, students are scored on their participation and leadership roles in student govemment/class government, newspaper/annual school publications, musical or ganizations, debate activities, stage productions, athletic teams, and club memberships. They are also rated according to commu nity organization memberships and volunteer service hours, grade point averages, and special achievements or awards. In final competition, students will be re quired to write an essay to be scored by a team of national judges. Good luck in continuing competition, ladies!
