The Kindergarten students from
Lee County Primary School spent
the morning of November 19
experiencing and celebrating
some of the Native American In
dian culture. The students rotated
through each kindergarten class
room experiencing nine different
cultural elements of the Native
American people. One of the Kin
dergarten social studies objec
tives is to identify the purpose and
customs associated with various
special days including Thanks
giving and birthdays. With this
event, the students can actually
experience this knowledge and
information because it is done in
such an accessible and inviting
way.
In Mrs. Pennington's room,
shelter was discussed while stu
dents made teepees using tortillas
and decorated them with Indian
signs. In Mrs. Thomas's room,
students enjoyed pumpkin pan
cakes with apple juice as they
observed an Eagle Dance. Tur
keys and their importance to the
American Indian were learned as
the students made their individual
turkeys in Mrs. Lubbehusen’s
room. Mrs. Hemphill guided stu
dents as they drew the details of
Indian dress on their Indian sil
houettes. The need for clothing
and its importance was practiced
in Mrs. Duke’s room as students
learned to weave. The story The
Legend of the Bluebonnet was
explained in Mrs. William’s room
while students ate popcorn. The
legend was further enhanced as
the students traveled to Texas in
Mrs. Whitley’s room to pick
Bluebonnet flowers to put in their
decorated Indian pottery. Archery
skills were practiced along with
hand signals in Mrs. Bynum’s
room. The sounds of Indian tom
toms could be heard from Mrs.
Hurst’s room as communication
techniques were taught.
Following the rotation, kinder
garten students took delight in an
outdoor picnic with their parents
and teachers.
