Family Fun Ideas To Brighten
The Holiday Season
Feeding A Cold Without Gaining Weight
(NAPSA)—Most people suffer
through colds for about 10 days.
For many of us, it’s a time when
we also pack on the pounds—from
the proverbial “feed a cold” to sim
ply lounging around. So what can
be done to stay fit when a cold
virus strikes?
It’s very important to eat a bal
anced diet when you are ill. Your
body needs food for energy and
protein to help repair the damage.
However, that doesn’t mean order
ing in fast food or stocking up on
convenience store sweets.
The following foods are not
only good for you, but have been
identified as containing sub
stances that help to ward off infec
tious diseases, including the com
mon cold: garlic and onions; citrus
fruits, berries, tomatoes and pep
pers; any member of the cabbage
family—broccoli, cauliflower,
Brussels sprouts, etc.; and zinc-
rich foods, such as wheat germ,
whole grains, seafood and meat.
While you should be catching
up on your ZZZ’s when you are ill
to allow your body to build up its
defenses, that doesn’t mean con
stant inactivity. There is evidence
that moderate exercise can boost
the immune system and help
relieve congestion. So, hit the

gym—-just remember to listen to
your body and do only as much as
it seems to tolerate easily.
To relieve your symptoms,
stick to sugar-free remedies. For
a sore throat, gargle with warm
salt water. For a stuffy nose, use
a room vaporizer; eat hot, spicy
foods; and eat or drink hot broth.
To suppress your coughing, try a
sugar-free, herbal-based cough
syrup such as Buckley’s Mixture
(less than 2 calories per tea
spoon). For fevers, drink as much
water and juice as possible to
counter the dehydration that
causes much of the discomfort
associated with fever.
(NAPSA)-The holiday season is
a time to celebrate family and
friends and to appreciate the people
that are important to us. It is also a
time to cultivate one's ability for
creativity, charity and festivity.
From decking the halls and host
ing holiday parties to giving some
thing back to the community, the
holiday season offers many op
portunities to make life a little
brighter. M&M/Mars has a few
suggestions for the holiday sea
son.
Creative Decorating Ideas
Decorating your home is one
of the fun parts of the holidays.
Sprinkle some creativity into
your holiday dAcor by hosting
a family get-together to trim the
tree, hang twinkle lights and
deck the halls+ with boughs of
candy. To make this eye-catch
ing (and edible) decoration, sim
ply lay your holiday garland out
flat and position candy pieces-like

tive touch.
Giving Back To The Community
Charitable organizations will
need extra support and help this
holiday season. Volunteering at a
soup kitchen with your family or
delivering homemade holiday
cards and candies to needy children
are wonderful ways to give back
to the community. You can also
organize a group to wrap gifts at
the mall and donate the proceeds
to your favorite charity. Families

Santa's Stocking Up on
Gardening Gifts
By Wayne McLaurin Georgia Extension Service
So you don't believe in the Jolly
Fat Man. You'd better, because
he's got all of the gardening gifts
you've been wanting.
Santa has the best working con
ditions up toward the North Pole
to test the many gardening tools.
Remember that the northerners
can garden almost 24 hours a day
in their long summers and really
put tools through their paces.
He's bound to have quality tools
that will last. I bet he has one of
those really fine English garden
ing forks. He even designed a
smaller version for Mrs. Claus to
use.
You know the small gardening
tools we call children's tools were
originally made for the elves. Af
ter all. they do help Santa in the
garden.
I really don't know what veg
etables Santa grows, but I feel
sure he can arrange to get you the
ones you want. Maybe he knows
someone who has the long-sought
heirloom tomato seeds you've
been seeking.
In the long, dark winters at the
North Pole, Santa surely has
many gardening books. Those
beautiful garden photos must look
good after a snowy day of mak
ing toys.
Santa is getting up in age and
surely knows about comfortable
gardening. He can bring you one
of those garden scooters you can
roll around on if you have prob
lems sitting on the ground. I un
derstand Mrs. Claus designed the
scooter because she got tired of
hearing Santa complain of aches
and pains.
And what about that load of
compost or manure you've
wanted for the past several years.
Santa can surely bring these.
What do you think he does with
all of that reindeer manure?
So watch out. Don't cry (or
whine). And please don't pout.
Santa is coming to bring you your
garden toys.
