Page 6A - The Lee County Ledger, Thursday, December 13,2001 What the Bible Teaches LCPS Good Workers For The Week The “Word” For The Week By Dr. Dennis Prutow By Frank Taylor Satan is the bitterest enemy of God and His people. Even his names tell you of his personal ity. He is called in Scripture “the deceiver” (Revelation 12:9), “a murderer” (John 8:44), “a tempter" (Matthew 4:3), “the destroyer” (which means destruction) (Revelation 9:11), “the liar” (John 8:44), “the accuser of the brethren” (Revelation 12:10), and “the evil one" (1 John 5:19). He is depicted as a roaring lion, searching the world for those he can devour, yet he attempts to portray himself as an “angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). From generation to generation he continues his attack. He is the arch traitor against God. Originally he was different. Strange as it may seem, he was originally God’s cherished creation. In Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 you can read about the earlier days of Satan. He was called Lucifer, “The son of the morning,” “the shining one," and “the day star.” Ezekiel 28 reveals he was “the anointed cherub;” perfect in beauty and in all of his ways full of wisdom; gifted with marvelous intelligence and glorious in holiness. So, what happened? How did Lucifer cease to be the son of the morning and become Satan, arch-enemy of God? Ezekiel 28 reveals that Lucifer lifted up his heart with pride, which led to self-exaltation and rebellion against God. Isaiah 14:12-13 says, “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! - For you have said in your heart, -1 will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will sit on the mount of the congrega tion -1 will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will be like the Most High." When those words came out of his mouth, sin began in the universe, and he was cast out of his position. Cast down as a profane one from the mountain of God, he was brought down into hell, taking many angels with him. I don’t pretend to understand all of the theological implica tions of that, but clearly God allowed His angels a choice, and they worship before His throne to this day because they choose to do so. But Satan, in his own heart, chose to lift himself up in pride, bringing about his own downfall. Ever since he was cast out of his original position, he has organized rebellion against God. He is angry, scheming, and spiteful, and he has put in place a system to wage war with God. His personality is one of pride and hatred toward God and everything that is good and holy. Having been cast out of his original position, the devil is filled with fury and envy. His anger is directed against God and His people. His aim is to defeat God by throwing people into hell, so he travels the earth as a roaring lion bent on destroying people. He has a well-organized army fighting for him, and they set up an outpost in the heart of every person to keep them in bondage to sin. One of the reasons so many prominent Christians have fallen into sin in recent years is because they have underesti mated the enemy and have not done battle with that outpost of sin in their lives. Satan uses that area of sin as a beachhead from which he can expand into more territory until he has destroyed the believerfs life, which is his purpose. Little Things are Big The ruler of the known world ordered a census to be taken for tax purposes. Because of this de cree, a big thing, many little things began to happen. The Bible records one of these seem ingly little things. “Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth.... And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. Jo seph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. While they were there, the days were Help in trouble Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble. The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies. I said, LORD, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee. As the hart panteth after the wa ter brooks, so panteth my soul af ter thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy king dom is a right sceptre. Thoulovest righteousness, and hatest wicked ness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of glad ness above thy fellows. All thy garments smell of myrrh, and al oes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the completed for her to give birth” (Luke 2:1-6). According to God’s plan, the big picture involved Christ com ing into the world in a hamlet called Bethlehem. Getting Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem in volved a census of the whole world. In God’s world, little things of life make up the big pic ture. Life is a carefully constructed building. Every brick has a place. Every window and door fits the plan. The big building is incom plete without every little piece in place. In God’s world, following God's plan, the little things in life always make up the big picture. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the king doms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Come, be hold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be ex alted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
