Birthday Party For Jesus
A Birthday Party for Jesus was held at Lauren and Kim Davis house out on New
York Road, Sunday afternoon December 16. The children attending the party
were (l-r front row) Jordan Cheshire, Morgan Roberts, Kris Cheshire, Olivia
Youmans, John Daniel Melvin. Middle row: Hailey Scott, Kyndall Scott, Lauren
Davis, Little Jack Bell. Back row: Ms. Denise Bell, Kim Davis, Kelly Cheshire,
and baby Til, Santa Claus (honored surprise vistor), Kayla Hobbs and Baby
Jackson Scott. Not pictured Barbara Cheshire, Joy Scott, Joan Roberts, Stacey
Scott, Harrold and Patsy Hobbs, Todd Thornton, John Melvin, Amber and
Suzanne Usry, Cecelia Chambliss and Crystal Youmans.
The Party was about the true meaning of Christmas (sharing and caring). The
children all brought gifts for a needy child. A surprise appearance by Santa
Claus rendered everyone speechless, and they filled Santa’s pack so he could
deliver the gifts. Ms. Kayla Hobbs read Christmas stories to them, and they all
sang Christmas Carols
around the fireplace. A
good time was had by all
and memories made for the
children to last a lifetime.

In spite of a tight federal
budget, legislation has been
passed by the U.S. House
that promises to bring a
number of veterans benefits
up to current and future cost-
of-living levels, according to
Representative Sanford
Bishop.
The Second District Con
gressman said the House
approved one bill to provide
a 2.6 percent cost-of-living
adjustment for veterans
pension and compensation
programs and another to
increase educational, hous
ing, burial, health care and
other benefits. The measures
now go to the Senate for final
approval, he said.
"Veterans earned these
benefits through faithful
service to the country,"
Representative Bishop said.
"It would impose an unfair
hardship on millions of
veterans if Congress did not
act this year to prevent a
further erosion of these
benefits through inflation."
The House-passed legisla
tion:
* Increases basic educa
tional assistance for full-time
study from the current $650 a
month to $800 on January 1,
2002; $900 on October 1,
2002; and $985 on October
1, 2003.
* Increases the veterans
home loan guarantee from
$50,700 to $60,000.
* Increases the grant for
specially adapted housing for
severely disabled veterans
from $43,000 to $48,000 and
from $8,250 to $9,250 for
less severely disabled
veterans.
* Extends to September 30,
2009, the authority for
housing loan guarantees for
members of the Selected
Reserve.
* Increases the burial and
funeral expense benefit for
service-connected veterans
from $ 1,500 to $2,000 and
the burial plot allowance
from $150 to $300.
* Increases the automobile
and adaptive equipment grant
for severely disabled veterans
from $8,000 to $9,000.
* Expands the definition of
undiagnosed illnesses for
Persian Gulf War veterans to
include fibromyalgia, chronic
fatigue syndrome, chronic
multisymptom illness, and
any other illness that cannot
be clearly defined.
* Adds type 2 diabetes to
the list of diseases presumed
to be service-connected
among Vietnam veterans
exposed to herbicide agents
and extends the authority to
classify additional diseases as
service-connected to 2012.

That tree of Christmas past
can give your community a

public landfills will no longer
