Big Things Are
Happening In Georgia
Georgia sportsmen and
women should be more excited
than ever to head out to the
woods and the water in light of
three recent "big" events! A
new state record 18-pound plus
brown trout, a new state record
560-pound black bear and a
monster 40-pound striped bass
all were successfully taken
during the month of November
according to the Georgia
Department of Natural Re
sources. Wildlife Resources
Division (WRD).
November was quite a good
month for many sportsmen and
women, especially three of
them!" says WRD Director
David Waller. "The Division is
pleased to see harvests like
these coming from the state -
they are fine examples of
flourishing wildlife in Georgia."
Charlie Ford of Rome caught
a new state record brown trout
that weighed in at 18-pounds,
6.72 ounces from the Lanier
Tailwaters on the
Chattahoochee River on a 6-lb.
line. This fish likely was
originally one of the more than
1.1 million trout that WRD
rears in one of three hatcheries
and stock in North Georgia
waters. It had been fortunate
enough to survive and grow to
this large size. Stocking trout is
one method of enhancing the
opportunities for recreational
fishing statewide. Angler
demand for trout fishing cannot
be met by Georgia's native trout
populations alone. Therefore,
to buffer pressure on native
trout and to increase fishing
opportunities, trout are reared to
a catchable size (about nine
inches) at state and federal
hatcheries and then stocked into
selected streams and lakes.
The new state record black
bear weighed in at 560 pounds
on certified scales and was
harvested by Ellijay resident
James Frazee while hunting on
private land in Gilmer County
with a rifle. While this bear
was taken on private property,
the previous state record was
taken just outside nearby
Dawson Forest Wildlife
Management Area (WMA) in
2000 and a top bear bow
harvest, taken in September

Creek WMA. WRD wildlife
biologists and technicians
manage these areas for the
benefit of wildlife. Manage
ment activities include pre
scribed burning, creating
wildlife food plots and monitor
ing acorn conditions. An
excellent acorn crop put deer
and bears in great physical
condition this fall. These
animals moved around a lot and
as a result hunters had a great
season.
While the recent catch of a 40-
pound striped bass on Lanier
did not break the lake record of
46 pounds caught more than a
decade ago, it certainly made
Cleveland resident Reggie
Botts' day. The fish was caught
on the north end of Lake Lanier
on Nov. 2 and interestingly, was
Reggie's first striper fishing trip
and the only catch of the day.
There are two reasons why
there have been more big fish
caught recently from Lanier -
improved summer oxygen
levels and an increased food
supply. The ongoing drought
produced a silver lining in the
form of an increase in cool
water summer habitat for
striped bass. Lower waters
means there is less organic or
nutrient material entering the
lake. This material typically
robs the water of dissolved
oxygen in order to decompose.
The lower nutrient input
translates into higher summer
oxygen levels, less stress on fish
and less weight loss by large
stripers. The second reason for
bigger fish on Lanier may be
the abundant summer food
supply of blueback herring.
The herring population has
increased dramatically in Lanier
over the past few years and has
added to the food base for sport
fish.
