Primary School Students Make Snacks And Learn To Follow Directions Second grade students in Mrs. McCaskill and Mrs. Bateman's classes made Rudolph the Red- Nosed Reindeer snacks during Reading on Monday. The stu dents heard the story of Rudolph and were given directions orally as to how to "construct" the snack. One of the concepts in the Quality Core Curriculum for sec ond graders is listening with an objective being able to follow oral directions even a three-step oral direction to complete a task. Pic tured with his finished product is Dean Harper. I would say Dean listened and followed the direc tions very well. Once the task was complete, students then were asked to put down on paper in order what they had just done which addresses the QCC topic of written communication with the objective being able to iden tify the sequence of events. The following is a writing by Ryan Piscopo. First I herd a story of Rudolph. Second we cut the bread into a triangle. Third we had peanut butter, Then we put peanut but ter on the pretzels so it could stick to the bread. The pretzels were for the antlers. Then we put the raisins on it. The raisins were for the eyes. Next we put the cherry on it. The cherry was for the nose. Finnaly we ate the Rudolph. The Rudolph was very very good. I ate preztels first. Second I ate the cherry. Then I ate the peanut butter and the bread. I ate the scraps too. Finnaly Mrs. O'Hearn came and saw the Rudolphs. Mrs. McCaskill took pictures of each table with the Rudolphs. Mrs. O'Hearn let us see the pic tures that Mrs. McCaskill took with the Rudolphs. Through Ryan's writing, you can see that he recognizes explicit sequence of events and expresses them very well.
