"In 1995 we didn't even pass a farm bill until well into 1996," says Bob Redding. GPC's lobbyist in Washington. "We have come a long way and this is hardly the time to give up now." The Commission took a position in February after months of study on the politics, the impact of the trade agree ments, and possible solutions to the ills of the struggling industry. The board voted to support a marketing loan program similar to those in place for other crops, seeking a loan rate of $500 per ton. They also felt that quota holders needed to be compensated for the loss of quota and suggested a 14-cent per pound per year payment. "We knew that we couldn't get everything we asked for but we left ourselves room to negoti ate." says Armond Morris, GPC's chairman of the board. "By keeping our focus, we have certainly made a lot of progress since then. We have more than a lot of people ever thought we could get." A farm bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives includes a marketing loan rate of $350 per ton. The bill also establishes a target price of W e ^ E s G S^ ! ‘ JACK DUREN’S Master BODY WORKS inc 1518 U.S. Hwy 19 (stop by and see our new location) 439-8833 (“-) FENDER AND BODY REPAIRS • AUTO PAINTING • GLASS REPLACEMENT COLLISION REPAIR & UNIBODY FRAME SPECIALISTS *FREE ESTIMATES AUTO ACCESSORIES • INSURANCE CLAIMS • IMPORTS & DOMESTICS APPROVED BY ALL MAJOR INSURANCE COMPANIES FOR DIRECT REPAIRS If You Are Involved In An Accident, Request the “Master” 24 Hour Wrecker Service & Roadside Assistance Your Full Service Collission Repair Shop In Lee County! $480 per ton and a 10-cent per pound per year quota buyout. It also includes a fixed decoupled payment of $36 per ton. In the version passed by the Senate Agriculture Committee the Loan rate was increased to $400 and the target price was increased to $520. "What we have to do now is generate calls to our Congress men and Senators telling them that they have to finish this farm bill immediately when they return to Washington in January," Morris says. "We need bankers, farmers, farm suppli ers, land owners and anyone else that depends on agriculture for a living to be calling if we are to succeed." Should a new farm bill not pass projections suggest that farmers could be faced with a $160 per ton added assessment in 2002 to pay for cost in the peanut program from the 2001 crop when the USDA set the quota too high and quota was placed in the government controlled loan program. "I am confident that if we keep our focus we can prevail early next year but the pressure must come to bear so that they pass a farm bill," says Joe Boddiford, GPC's vice chair man of the board. "The issue is much, much bigger than peanuts."
