Thousands of men and women
across the country will celebrate
Sertoma International’s 90th an
niversary this week. Founded
April 11. 1912, Sertoma stands
for SERvice TO MAnkind. Ser
toma is the United States’ third
oldest civic service organization.
Over the years, Sertomans have
raised millions of dollars; spon
sored thousands of speech and
hearing clinics, National Heritage
essay contests and patriotic
events; and have presented
SERvice TO MAnkind awards to
thousands of deserving individu
als. Sertomans today, like the
organization’s founders in Kan
sas City, Mo., still uphold
Sertoma’s purpose; service to one
another and to their communities.
Communities across the coun
try have benefited from the hard
work of men and women united
to make their communities better
places to live. Since Sertoma’s
founding, people have formed

tors’ contracts not being renewed, she said that the recent personnel
decisions have raised some pretty serious questions and the commu
nity needs answers to those questions.
Mrs. Mullins said that vague answers are being given to serious
questions. Mrs. Mullins asked the board to validate concerns that the
community are expressing. She pointed out that there exists a job
hazard concern in the local school system. She said there exists a
fear factor among school personnel. She pointed out that the school
system uses questionable hiring practices and that the board mem
bers rubber stamp decisions made by the school superintendent.
In closing, Viki Mullins said that she is helping fight for what is
good and what works in Lee County and that she hopes it all has not
been for naught.
Dr. Lewis presented the board with a resolution concerning Greg
Oliver. It is necessary to have a rehearing of the dismissal of Greg
Oliver, pursuant to the order of the Lee County Superior Court. Oliver,
who was hired as high school principal, was terminated by the board
of education in October 2000.
The school board will designate a tribunal to conduct the hearing.
The tribunal, consisting of not less than three nor more than five
impartial persons possessing academic expertise, will conduct the
hearing. The individuals to serve as members of the tribunal shall be
approved by the board’s chair. Truitt Martin, an attorney from Daw
son, will serve as the hearing officer or legal advisor to the tribunal.
At the conclusion of the hearing, the tribunal shall file its findings
and recommendations with the school board. The school board will
then render its decision in accordance with the provisions of the Fair
Dismissal Act.
The hearing will be held at 10:00 a.m. on April 24.
