The Lee County Chamber of Commerce held a Ground Breaking Ceremony for
Georgia Farm Bureau on Thursday, April 25. Pictured on the front row and
participating in the ground breaking ceremony were members of the Farm Bureau
Board. The new office for Georgia Farm Bureau will be located at the corner of
R.B. Lee and Park Street.
Ed Rynders Announces
Candidacy For District 137
Ed Rynders, who identified
himself as a passionate advocate
for conservative common sense
government, announced Tuesday
that he is a candidate for the Geor
gia House of Representatives for
the 137 District. District 137
comprises portions of Lee,
Dougherty, Colquitt, Thomas and
Worth Counties and represents
46,400 people. Included in that
number are 17.500 Lee
Countians. The rest of the district
includes 14,000 Dougherty
County citizens, 12,000 Colquitt
Countians, 1.700 Thomas County
citizens and 1200 people from
Worth County.
Ed Rynders resides in Lee
County with his wife, Jane, and
their three children. Megan, Matt
and Brooks. Jane Rynders is a
teacher. The Rynders' are mem
bers of the Leesburg United
Methodist Church.
Rynders has served on several
election campaigns and was a
delegate to the
State Republi
can Conven
tion. He is a
past chairman
of the Lee
County Re
publican Party
and is cur
rently a Re
publican ap
pointee to the
Lee County
Board of
Elections.
Rynders
said that
Southwest
Georgia is
constantly
losing its best and brightest col
lege graduates who go elsewhere
looking for better opportunities.
He believes the Georgia General
Assembly has a moral obligation
to develop the
entire state not
just the Atlanta
area. Rynders
said the key to
future eco
nomic growth
is an educated
workforce and
regional coop
eration.

believes that

family values
are being jeop
ardize. He
thinks govern
ment should
monitor itself to ensure bureau
cracy does not become a bigger
burden to the taxpayers.

Security Tight At Middle School
According to a news release
from Dr. W.S. Bill Lewis, Super
intendent, on April 30, security
remains tight at Lee County
Middle School following addi
tional threats written on bath
room walls on Friday, April 26
and Monday, April 29. In both
situations, the students respon
sible have been identified and the
school has begun proceedings to
punish the students.
It is the school system’s under
standing that the Leesburg Police
have also filed charges against
each of the students. In addition,
on Tuesday, a third student had
been suspended for a verbal
statement in which the student
claimed to have a gun (no gun
existed).
An investigation continues into
a threat written on the bathroom
wall on Tuesday, April 23. Ad
ministration believes that they
are close to identifying the stu
dent responsible for that threat.
Restrictions on book bags and
student movement within the
school will continue. At the
close of school on May 1, the
school will issue an outline of
the past week’s events to stu
dents and parents as well as in
structions surrounding coming
events.
The Lee County Chamber of Commerce held a Ground Breaking Ceremony for
Eddy Meeks, Attorney at Law. Mr. Meeks’ law office will be located at the corner
of R.B. Lee and Park Street in Leesburg. City and county officials along with Lee
County Chamber of Commerce board members and guests participated in the
ground breaking ceremony.
Truck Stolen From Petro
Over The Weekend
The Leesburg Police Depart
ment responded to a theft by tak
ing (motor vehicle) on Sunday.
April 28.
Charles Daughtry called the
police at 7:28 p.m. Sunday night
indicating that his 1995 Dodge
truck had been stolen from the
Petro at 106 Walnut Street. Mr.
Daughtry indicated that he had
finished filling the truck and gone
inside to pay. He did not leave the
truck running but did leave the
keys in the vehicle. Mr. Daughtry
observed a white male with
brown hair take his truck. With
Lee County Sheriff’s deputies on
the lookout, the vehicle was ob
served on Graves Springs Road.
After a chase, the offender bailed
out of the vehicle. Patrick Gibbs,

Leesburg, was arrested for theft
by taking (motor vehicle).
Also on April 28, Corey
Marcelleus Lee, 25, of Albany,
was charged with speeding 53/35
and driving while license sus
pended.
Captain Moody responded to a
call of criminal trespass on April
24. The victim reported that
someone had broken the driver’s
side window out of her 1994
Toyota which was parked in the
yard of her residence on Magno
lia Street.
Officer Griffin worked a call of
entering auto on April 24. Com
plainant advised that an unknown
person entered her vehicle and
took the car stereo. There were no
apparent signs of forced entry.
Officer Barrett responded to a
theft by taking on April 23. Com
plainant indicated that a boys bi
cycle valued at approximately
$149 had been stolen from his
Magnolia Street address.
On April 18, an entering auto
was reported at Lee County High
School. Complainant indicated
that someone broke into his car
in the high school parking lot. A
pair of sunglasses and a cell
phone were taken. Items taken
were valued at approximately
$270.
John Wheaton
Wheaton Attends Probate
Judges Spring Seminar
John Wheaton, Judge of the probate court
of Lee County, attended the Council of Pro
bate Court Judges Spring meeting in Augusta
April 7 through April 19. During the meet
ing, the judges elected new officers.
The probate judges also attended judicial
training courses. Course topics included new
legislation, group discussions, evidence, case
law updates and the Learning Styles Inven
tory.
The Council of Probate Court Judges was
created to further the improvement of the probate courts and the
administration of justice. It is composed of judges and retired judges
of the Georgia probate courts.
Sheriff’s Department Issues Report
Lee County Sheriff’s Deputies
worked several calls in the past
week including burglary, theft by
shoplifting, and disorderly con
duct.
Teresa Beasley, 28, of 2305AN.
Davis Street, Albany, was
charged with Possession of mari
juana less than an ounce and theft
by shoplifting on April 23.
Beasley was charged after offic-

Feeling nostalgic?
Lee County Elementary School will host a ceremony to bid farewell to its
historic campus on May 9, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. The community is invited to
participate in the activities planned to celebrate eighty years of education.
LCES students will perform a walk through time by depicting events from the
1920’s to present day. LCES faculty and former faculty will serve as guides
for the farewell tour of the buildings and grounds. If you have any historic

Anthony George Duvall, 18, of

burg, was charged with burglary

Police Chief Walt Causey is
sued the following arrest report
for the Smithville Police Depart
ment.
According to Kathy Albright,
Public Relations Officer, police
officers worked cases involving
threats and disorderly conduct
( severe), attempted burglary, and
driving on suspended license.
On April 30, Chief Walt Cau
sey was told by the complainant
that Marcus Butts had threatened
to hit him with a crowbar. The
complainant said Mr. Butts had
threatened him. On the night of
April 29, Mr. Butts came out of
his apartment and ran at the vic
tim yelling that he was going to
bash his head in with a crowbar.
A warrant was issued for Marcus
Butts for disorderly conduct ( se
vere) with weapon.
On April 28, a Muckaloochee
Street resident reported an at
tempted burglary. Someone tried
to enter the house by standing on
a garbage can to enter the house
through the window and then
tried to enter the back through
the back door. The complainant
thinks the movement within the
house could have scared the per
son away.
Chief Causey investigated a
burglary on April 21. The per
son was moving out of her apart
ment on Wells Street. While the
victim was away from the apart
ment, someone entered the
apartment through an open win
dow. Reported missing were a
cell phone and two Nintendo
games.
Andrea Onil Summerset, 28, of
1505 Highland Ave. Apt. B, Al
bany, Georgia, was charged with
driving on suspended license by
Officer Dewayne Baisden.
While making a traffic stop,
Officer Baisden found the driver
to be driving on suspended li
cense but had not been served.
Summerset was served with the
notice that the license was sus
pended and the license was taken
and sent to the department of
public safety.
