BUFFALO ROCK Lee County Commission will meet 6:00 p.m. Monday, January 5 at the County Administration Building Gene Glasscock, 69, is in the middle of a 20,000 plus miles three year continual journey that will take him to all 48 state capitals in the continental United States. Most people would be content to have made history once. Famed American Long Rider Gene Glasscock is ready to do it again! Mr. Glass cock is already well known for being the only person on record to have ridden from North to South America. The Texas born equestrian trav eler accomplished that feat in the 1980s when he rode his Quarter Horse, Cactus, 12,000 miles from the Arctic Circle in Canada to the Equator in Ecuador. Gene Glasscock is on another, maybe his last, great equestrian adventure that brought him to Lee County over the weekend. Friday afternoon, he arrived in Smithville with his two horses and enjoyed the southern hos pitality of Johnny and Trudy Gosa. After leaving the Gosa’s barn with his six year old high- stepping Tennessee Walkers, Mr. Glasscock had lunch at Hardee’s in Leesburg. Gene Glasscock is the oldest person to set out on a journey of this magnitude. He told the Long Riders’ Guild that he has two purposes for making the trip. First, he plans to raise money for a unique scholarship program, known as The Phil lips Fund, designed to educate underprivileged young adults from Paraguay. Yet while his work for the young is admirable. Gene also has a message for an often overlooked portion of Ameri ca’s population as well - its se nior citizens. “I know I’m older now. But I can still swing into that saddle. So even if I have to ride a little slower, I want older people to look at me and realize they don’t have to just sit on the porch and do nothing. I’m proof positive that they can mount up, ride out, and still live life!” Mr. Glasscock told the Long Rider Guild. Donations to the Philip Schol arship Fund may be mailed to Pensacola Christian College, 250 Brent Lane, Pensacola, Florida 32523.
